ERIC GILL ST MARTIN OF TOURS RELIEF patinated bronze relief panel, cast inscription 'St Martin/ Pray/ For Us' 45cm x 39cm Literature: Judith Collins, 'Eric Gill: the Sculpture', London 1998, pl. 249, pp 195-6 Note; This relief panel was originally commissioned in stone for Campion Hall Brewer Street Oxford in 1935, and executed from September - October of that year. The new building was designed by Edwin Lutyens and the plaque was unveiled on Armistice Day, 11th November 1935. A cast of the finished work was presumably taken at this time. In this relief St Martin has dismounted from his horse and is depicted in the act of tearing his cloak in half in order to share it with the naked beggar who seeks his help.
Ernst Barlach, A Russian Beggar Woman with bowl, 20th Century, pottery, the woman seated with a scarf and begging bowl under a metallic bronze glaze, 29cm chip to bowl. Ernst Barlach was a leading figure in German Expressionism. This work was influenced by his travels in Russia in 1906, and set out his sculptural style. Later in life, his work was attacked by the national socialists who claimed his work 'degenerate'.

A Pair of Figures, Bacchus and Ondine, after J B Klagmann, Minton, 1862 and 1864, Bacchus stands half naked draped in a lion skin beside a grape vine, drinking from a ram's horn cup, Ondine stands semi-naked, a tipping vase supported by her right hand, circular stepped bases, both with impressed mark "Minton" and respective year cyphers, 42cm and 41.5cm high respectively See illustration A similar figure of Bacchus is illustrated in the The Parian Phenomenon, A Survey of Victorian Parian Porcelain Statuary & Busts, edited by Paul Atterbury, published by Richard Dennis, fig.118, where a footnote describes the piece as exhibited by Minton at the International Exhibition 1862, the companion to Ondine, who was herself shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Bronze statuettes of Bacchus and Ondine by Klagmann appeared in the Paris Salon of 1859. Bacchus is described as shape 353. Ondine also occurs in tinted parian, and an example of such is illustrated in The Parian Phenomenon on page 6. Versions were also available with elaborate glazed pedestals (as shown at The Vienna Exhibition 1873, as shape numbers 473 and 479. Jean-Baptiste Jules Klagmann (1810-1867) born in Paris and began his career in a copper foundry before studying as a decorative and monumental sculptor under J J Feuchere and E J Ramey. Designed Goldsmiths work in the Renaissance manner and then worked as a designer for Sevres. Bacchus (Greek-Dyonysus) God of Wine, originally a fertility god whose rites were accompanied by frenzied orgies. Ondine (or Undine) was a water spirit, the subject of La Motte Fouque's Fairy Romance.
Maternal Devotion, after a variation of a bronze by Jean-Jacques Pradier known as "The Prayer", Shape 211, Minton, probably published after 1849, the mother kneeling in prayer over a chair where a sleeping infant lies, on a rectangular base, no factory mark, year cypher for 1860, 33.5cm high A similar figure is illustrated in The Parian Phenomenon, A Survey of Victorian Parian Porcelain Statuary & Busts, edited by Paul Atterbury, published by Richard Dennis, fig.95, pg.68, where the figure as described as being "mentioned in the Journal of Design, March 1849".

The group first appeared in a plaster version at the 1843 Paris Salon. Bronze versions are at Cleveland, Ohio and in The Louvre. In Jones (Joan) MINTON-The First Two Hundred Years of Design and Production Amazon is described as available in parian (spear extra), ivory and Persian multi-colours. It was also exhibited at The London Exhibition 1862. Jean-Jacques Feuchere (1807-1852). Born in Paris, studied under Cortot and Ramey, known principally for his architectural studies.
