The John Thomas Dearden footwear and repairer collection of national competition prizes and exhibits. J T Dearden (born 1900) started repairing clogs in the front room of his terraced house, later he moved to a shop in Leigh, Lancashire and then another shop in Tyldesley. He started competing in shoe repairing competitions after visiting the shoe and leather fair in Manchester. He enjoyed great success in competitions over many years. In 1957 he was described as "The only man in the country who has been top in leather, rubber, neolite and pinpoint", he died in 1985. The collection comprises: a) A pair of award winning repairing/pinpoint work shoes reputedly containing 12,000 pins/nails (see photo), the soles depicting in coloured leathers an Indian elephant with Mahout and Howdah atop with the Taj Mahal in the background with a decorative border in coloured leather and brass and steel pins, the heel being decorated with an image of the Taj Mahal. b) A pair of award winning repairing/pinpoint work shoes, the soles depicting in coloured leather a red rose on a stem with leaves, with a blue border decorated with brass and steel pins, the heel decorated with an image of a bowl of fruit. c) A silver prize cup with cover and stand inscribed "Puritan Shoe Repairing Competition Open Class 1957", Birmingham 1955, height on stand 26cm, weight 8.5oz. d) A silver prize cup on stand inscribed "Leather Quarterly Shoe Repairers National 1956", London 1950, height on stand 13cm, weight 2.5oz. e) Small silver prize cup inscribed "L & D UPS", Birmingham 1930, height 6.5cm, weight 0.75oz. f) Silver prize cup on stand inscribed "The Shoe and Leather Fair London National Shoe Repairing Competition Replica of Open Exhibition Challenge Cup for Pinpointing 1950", Birmingham 1950 by Adie Brothers, height on stand 19cm, weight 9oz. g) Silver prize cup on stand inscribed "The Shoe and Leather Fair National Shoe Repairing Competitions Replica of Championship Cup Section A 1953", Birmingham 1952, height on stand 22cm, weight 8.5oz. h) Silverplated presentation prize tray inscribed "The Puritan Shoe Repairing Competition 1938 John Thomas Dearden Winner Special Class". i) Silverplated presentation prize tray inscribed "Puritan Shoe Repairing Competition 1950 Special Class 1st Prize awarded to J T Dearden Junior". j) A 9ct gold prize medal in case of issue inscribed "The Shoe and Leather Fair 1952 National Shoe Repairing Competitions Section A Champion Cup Class J T Dearden", Birmingham 1952 by Toye & Spencer, weight 9gms. k) Two cased silver prize medals for the silver "National Shoe Repairing Competitions" for the years 1950 and 1951 inscribed "1st Prize District Class No 3", Birmingham 1951 by Fattorini, total weight 4oz. l) Four cased bronze prize medals inscribed "National Shoe Repairing Competition 3rd Prize District Class" for the years 1939, 1949, 1950, 1951. m) An old leather suitcase containing two pairs of ladies repaired shoes, a pair of brown leather gentleman's repaired shoes, a single black leather gentleman's repaired shoe and another, these were used in the shop window and can be seen in one of the photographs. n) A quantity of newspaper cuttings relating to J T Dearden's success in competitions, also a quantity of photographs of award presentations, displays of shoes, cups etc, and also of the shops with exhibitions of his work and awards. Of Beatles interest, a cast bronze bowl inscribed "Cast From The Bells of St Barnabus Penny Lane Presented by Sydney Prentise, Service 1908 to 1954 to Sydney Clough 1954", Paul McCartney was in St Barnabus Church choir and wrote the song "Penny Lane" from the Sgt. Pepper sessions and released in 1967, height 8cm, diameter 14cm
