A bronze head of Apollo with a crown of radiating hair, eyes carefully detailed, wide-open and piercing, facial features sharply defined; to the rear a round-section branch, part of the background of vegetation; supplied with a custom-made display stand. Cf. bronze Apollo figurine from St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England in Durham, E. Metal Figurines in Roman Britain, Reading, 2010 plate 10. 54 grams, 62mm including stand (2 1/2"). Very fine condition.From an important Mayfair, London, collection; acquired in the 1990s. Possibly originating from Asia Minor, Apollo was the protector of cattle and mankind, promoter of agriculture and the god of music, especially the lyre. But, above all he is known as a god of healing and oracles with his major sanctuary in Delphi being the oracular centre of the ancient world. The laurel plant was sacred to him and the Muses were his companions. From the sixth century BC onwards he was closely associated with the sun and took the epithet Phoebus, meaning the bright or pure one. Apollo was the first Greek god to be introduced to Italy and the Emperor Augustus saw him as his personal protector.

A group of two bronze mounts comprising: a convex female theatre mask with brow-band, one eye voided; a reclining lion with head turned to the right, stepped underside, mounted on a custom-made stand. 112 grams total, 40-81mm including stand (1 1/2 - 3 1/4"). Walter Steinberg was a well-known figure at fairs, sales and events for many years.Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he retired to New York and decided to pass on the antiquities and coins he had collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contained many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter sadly passed away in 2015; he hoped that the items he collected would find new homes with the next generation of collectors. [2]
