†SAMUEL TONKISS (1909-1992) HEAD OF LAURENCE STEPHEN LOWRY, RA 1975 bronze, cast by the Morris Singer Foundry London in 1975, on serpentine base, signed TONKISS, foundry seal, serpentine base, 33cm h overall Provenance: anon sale in these 'rooms, 6 May 2009, lot 1002 to the present vendor. Samuel Tonkiss was born in Shropshire and moved to Todmorden in West Yorkshire where he worked as a journalist. In 1959 began to sculpt a series of portrait busts, some of which were cast in small editions. An earlier head of Lowry sculpted in 1971 is in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The present bust, being un-numbered, is extra to the edition of 36, cast in 1975. Tonkiss wrote two autobiographies, Just for the Record and Raking Amongst the Embers.++In good condition

A Japanese bronze censer, late 19th/early 20th century, the pierced lid with stylised pine trees and cell border, the main body decorated in relief with butterflies and a dragonfly, all upon Lingzhi feet, with character mark to the underside, all upon a cast and pierced rock form and floral stand with key border, height 14.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There are traces of verdigris to the interior of the lid and to the interior of the lotus leaf decoration. On the main body there is a lump of solder to the underside of the rim which appears to be a repair to a firing flaw on the rim, although the repair is not immediately obvious. The remainder of the body appears to be in good order. The stand appears to be in good order. Other than those faults mentioned there are no further obvious faults visible.
A Chinese polished bronze censor, early 20th century, the pierced cover with dragon finial, the censor with relief decorated dragons and sacred pearl, with shoe medallions and auspicious symbols, with elephant mask and ring handles on three short feet, height 23 cm, and a polished bronze dragon vase with four character pseudo Xuande mark, height 25 cm.
A Persian inspired black marble mantle clock, circa 1880, surmounted by a bronze Persian Sphinx, the gilt dial with Roman numerals, inscribed for "Benham and Sons, Wigmore Street, London", flanked to either side by two bronze winged Sphinxes, the eight day movement chiming on a bell, all on a cast bronze base. Height 37 cm, width 36 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds on both trains. It appears to be ticking away and strikes as it should when advanced. The clock case is in extremely good condition with no significant marks or damage of any note. The Sphinx mounts are also all in good order with no damage. The rear door is present. The only minor issue is that the black paint to the numerals is a little rubbed in places.
