A LOUIS XV KINGWOOD AND GILT BRONZE MOUNTED SERPENTINE FRONTED COMMODE, the variegated marble top with moulded border above two short and two long drawers with marquetry crossbanding and rococo style mounts, between serpentine corners with conforming mounts, stamped to the top of one leg "Boudin JME", 34" high x 46" wide. See illustration Leonard Boudin (1735-1807) was recorded as an independent ébéniste who worked in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine district of Paris until 1767, then opening a shop in the rue Froidmanteau in the early 1770s. Throughout his career, Boudin was renowned for his skill in marquetry, parquetry and lacquer, becoming a Master Ébéniste in 1761. After a number of significant commissions, including suppliying a bureau-plat to Gilles Joubert (marchand-ébéniste to the Garde-Meuble Royal) for the Comte de Provence at Compiègne and a commode for the Comte at Fontainebleau in 1771), Boudin became one of the leading marchand-merciers in France during the 18th century Some of the most important pieces of furniture bearing Boudin's stamp are in the collections of the Louvre, Carnavalet, Chateau de Versailles and the Cleveland Museum of Art
