An Art Nouveau Hallmarked Silver Presentation Cup and Cover, composed of tapering gilt lined cylindrical bowl, moulded with stylised orange trees, supported by a mermaid riding on the crest of a wave with outstretched arms, on swirling base with three scroll feet, the wide lipped cover with shell textured detail and fan-tailed fish finial, bearing presentation inscription "Presented by The Officers N.C.O.s and Men of the 2nd V.B. York and Lancaster Regt to Col. C. J. Stoddart, on his retirement from the command 8th October 1906", Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd, London 1902, 45.5cms high, 2200grams. *The cup was designed by John Beresford Walker (1877-1948) who was born in Edinburgh and trained at the City`s School of Art before moving to Sheffield in 1898. He was a highly acclaimed designer, sculptor and craftsman in silver, gold and bronze and was a Master of the Sheffield Artscrafts Guild from 1927 to 1928. While in Sheffield (where he worked freelance) Walker undertook important commission work including the creation of an Ascot Gold Cup, a Royal Hunt Cup, church plate for Rippon Cathedral and works for the Viceroy of India. *Sir Charles John Stoddart, V.D, J.P. (1839-1913) was born in London and became assistant secretary at the Parkgate Ironworks, Rotherham in 1864, having risen from the position of office boy at the London office went on to serve the company for over 50 years and become Managing Director. He held the position of Mayor of Rotherham three times and became Rotherham`s Jubilee Mayor in 1886. In 1888 he was appointed Commander of the Rotherham detachment of the 2nd VB of the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment and was the first president of the original Rotherham football club. Once described as the town`s greatest benefactor, he died in 1913.
