A Tibetan gilt bronze figure of Padmasambhava , 16-17th century, seated on a double lotus throne, holding a vajra in his right hand and a kapala and kalasa in his left hand, a loop for his staff (now missing) on his chest wearing a lama's cap with sun and moon emblem, with vajra finial, 17cm high The legendary Indian Buddhist teacher Padmasambhava is known as Guru Rinpoche to Tibetans. Padmasambhava is recognizable by the iconic peaked Indian cap of a pandita, with a sun and moon emblem, as well as his furrowed brow and the wide, almond-shaped eyes which set him apart as a foreigner. Known by many different names which reflect his multiple forms, Padmasambhava is credited with establishing Buddhism in Tibet. 16-17?? ???????????

A Tibetan bronze figure of Amitayus , 14th/15th century, seated in padmasana on a double lotus throne with hands in dhyama mudra , wearing large hoop earrings, the pendant hanging from his necklace inlaid with silver, his eyes inlaid with copper and silver, his lips inlaid with bronze, 25.3cm high Provenance: By repute from an Indonesian collection formed in the 1970's and then by descent and to the current owner. This pose of this Buddhist figure suggests an identification as Amitayus. The domed hair suggests that the usual crown was either damaged and smoothed off, or was separately made and lost. A large bronze figure of Buddha, Western Tibet, 13th/14th century or later, seated in padmasana on a throne, supported by a figure and paired lions and leogryphs, his hands in dharmacakra mudra, his eyes inlaid with silver and lips with copper, 38cm high Provenance: By repute from an Indonesian collection formed in the 1970's and then by descent and to the current owner. The unmistakeable Kashmiri influences on this image, exemplified by the treatment of the throne and the stylised folds in the Buddha s robes, are an archaism arising out of visits by monks from Western Tibet to Kashmir from the 11th century onwards. Kashmir sculpture was itself derived from the western influenced Gandharan style, which is still evident here in the style of the outer pair of lions and the possible identification of the supporting figure as Atlas, who is often seen in Gandhara sculpture. The Kashmir style persisted in Western Tibet until the 15th century. A Chinese bronze 'gold splash' censer, Qing Dynasty, the ovoid body with branch handles and supported on three fruit and leaf feet, Xuande two character seal mark to base, 19cm wide handle to handle and 12.5cm high, 1543g Provenance: Collected in the 1930's by Lieutenant-Commander Ninian Scott-Elliot, 1911-1998 and by descent. After an education at Eton, Scott-Elliot joined the Royal Navy and was soon serving on gunboats patrolling the Upper Yangtze River. He won a distinguished Service Cross as well as being mentioned in Dispatches when serving in the Royal Navy in the Second World War. Subsequently he settled on an island in the Solomon group where he developed a large estate and behaved like a benevolent nineteenth-century laird. ? 19?? ????????? ????:???????? One figure bearded, supported on an integral stand with lingzhi and stylised waves, holding a small ball in his right hand, the other with red cold painted details, together with a wood stand, 26.5cm. (3) Cf. R Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, pp.80-85 no.64 and also M Maucuer, Bronzes de la Chine impériale des Song aux Qing, p.156, no.108 for similar figures. Lü Dongbin is one of the Eight Immortals honoured as a great poet and swordsman.
