A Greek bronze Corinthian helmet Circa late 6th Century B.C.23cm high Footnotes:Provenance:Kuizenga collection, the Netherlands, acquired in Cologne in 1984.This helmet would have been exceedingly impressive in its original form, as it is extravagantly decorated with a large repoussé scrolling palmette over the brow, finely incised palmettes at the corners of each eye, and an incised decorative dotted border running around the eye holes and the outer edge of the helmet, with upturned lotus flowers at the sides (one preserved). There are two ancient and original attachment plates partially preserved at the dome, for the attachment of a crest or, more likely, horns.Cf. for a selection of Corinthian helmets with incised lotus flowers and palmettes, and dramatic repoussé decoration on the brow (more commonly horns), see R. Hixenbaugh, Ancient Greek Helmets: A Complete Guide and Catalog, New York, 2019, p. 411, nos. C546-C567, especially helmet fragment no. C562 which also has a repoussé scrolling palmette between the brow, formerly in the collection of Axel Guttmann (1944-2001), and no. C567 at the Museo Archaeologico Nazionale della Sirtide in Lucania, which retains its original horns. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

An Etruscan bronze mirror Circa late 4th-3rd Century B.C.29.5cm high Footnotes:Provenance:Private collection, UK.Anonymous sale; Christie's, London, 10 July 1991, lot 170.Private collection, UK, acquired at the above sale. This mirror is engraved with a scene of the satyr Marsyas bound to a tree trunk, with a male figure wearing only a chlamys at his shoulder standing before him, who is likely the god Apollo. A male in Scythian garb stands centrally. Marsyas incurred the wrath of Apollo by challenging the god to a music contest. Apollo agreed on the condition that the victor could punish the loser as they saw fit, and ordered the prideful satyr to be flayed alive by a Scythian slave after his victory. Cf. an Etruscan bronze incense burner with a figure of Marsyas, at the Metropolitan Museum, New York, acc. no. 1972.118.87, and a Praenestine mirror naming a dancing Marsyas at the Villa Giulia, Rome, inv. no. 24898.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A Greek bronze Corinthian helmet with inscriptions Circa 7th Century B.C.21cm highFootnotes:Provenance:Anonymous sale; Christie's, Amsterdam, 6th October 1983, lot 383.Kuizenga collection, the Netherlands, acquired at the above sale. With a punched inscription: ΓΕΛΙΟΥ ΜΕΓΑΡΕΥΣ, on the cheekpieces, giving the name of the owner: 'Geliou (of Gelios) Megareos': Gelios the Megarian. For the type, see an example formerly in the Axel Guttmann collection, sold at Christie's in London on 28 April 2004 (lot 68).The main reason for inscriptions on helmets are trophy related. Some Corinthian helmets were seized as spoils of war, and were then inscribed as a record of victories before being dedicated in sanctuaries such as Olympia. For an example of this, see a Corinthian helmet in the British Museum, acc. no. 1824,0407.32, which records that the people of Argos won the helmet in battle from the Corinthians and dedicated it to Zeus in his sanctuary. See also a Corinthian helmet fragment in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, acc. no. 01.7479, inscribed in retrograde in Laconian script 'of Olympian Zeus'. As only wealthy citizens could afford the cost of hoplite armour it would have been a symbol of the status and wealth of its owner, hence it seems natural that helmets may sometimes have have been inscribed with the owners name. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
