Cycling interest: an interesting collection of 20 cycling award medals of 1920’s/30’s vintage. Mostly in HM silver the medals comprise: Southern Counties Cycling Union in silver gilt and enamel (2) and bronze and enamel; Calleva Road Club HM silver (2, for club records in 50 miles and tandem and 25 miles 1929) and bronze and enamel; Centaur Bicycle Club HM silver for Cross Country team race 1st 1932; Luton Wheelers Cycling Club HM silver and enamel, team race 25 miles 1934; West London Cycling Assn HM silver and enamel Track Team Championship 1st 1932; Ross Wheelers Richmond CC silver and enamel (4) 1931-1933; 3 other various HM silver and 4 bronze. A small bronze figure of a Crimean War period Scottish soldier of the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment, wearing feather bonnet and with musket, dirk and short sword, on bronze mounted rectangular slate plinth, overall height 8”. GC (tip of bonnet broken off but present, plinth chipped)
An early 20th century French infantry officer’s sword, slender blade 34”, marked “Coulaux & Cie Klingenthal” on one edge at forte, with twin slender fullers running the whole length and shallow fuller for top half, lacquered bronze hilt and prominent stud, wirebound darkwood grip, in a British leather covered FS scabbard. GC (bars of hilt slightly bent)
5th Foot Order of Merit, with struck obverse and engraved reverse, diam 35mm, with ornate loop suspender. Obv. representation of St George slaying dragon with scroll “Quo Fata Vocant” above and scroll “Vth Foot” below; rev engraved “Jefy Morris After 21 Yrs Good Faithful Service as a Soldier hath received from his commanding offr this honorable testimonial of his Merit” and dated in exergue “June the 4th 1769”. 1866 Fenian Raid, Veteran Association Medal. A bronze and gilt eight-pointed star the central boss with a bust of Victoria before a maple leaf, surrounded by the inscription, 'Veterans' Association 1866', on red, white and blue ribbon with additional red ribbon inscribed, 'Committee 1899'. Between 1866 and 1871, the Fenian Brotherhood, based in the USA, launched raids on British army forts, customs posts and other targets in Canada, to bring pressure on Britain to withdraw from Ireland. There were five Fenian raids of note and all of them ended in failure.
1939-1945 United States Air Force, pilot's A2 flying jacket A 1942 russet-coloured, leather USAAF A-2 flight jacket, made by Bronco Mfg. Corp., named to Lieutenant HD (Hoyt Dan) Fisk, with 10th Air Force badge to left shoulder. Together with flight suit (also named to Fisk), silk scarf, 'Ike' uniform tunic, uniform visor cap and uniform shirt. (6) Sold by the family of Lt. Fisk in 1976 to a dealer in military uniforms. Purchased by an Irish collector in America in the 1990s. Sold by him to the current owner in 2016.Lieutenant Fisk flew Douglas C-47 Skytrains in the Indo-China theatre. The 10th Air Force was responsible for operating the India-China Ferry between 8 April and 1 December 1942. The airlift route was over the the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains over which they flew military transport aircraft from India to China to resupply the Chinese war effort. Aircrews called the operation 'the Hump'. According to Fisk's son Dan, he held the record for the greatest number of trips over the Hump during the war and was awarded five Distinguished Flying Crosses, eight Battle Stars / Air Medals, three Bronze Stars, five General's Commendations and three Presidential Citations. Of the 200 pilots in his original group, only he and one other pilot survived 'the Hump'. The airmen called it "The Aluminum Trail" because so many C-46's and 47's were either shot down by Japanese fighters, brought down by ice or inclement weather or collided into the mountains due to ice on the wings and windshields or navigation errors.Hoyt Dan Fisk survived the war and built a successful oil business in Kansas.Whyte's wish to acknowledge the assisance of the Fisk family in cataloguing this lot.
1984 The Dying Cúchulainn bronze, presentation to Eileen Lemass MEP. An unusual version of the 1966 commemorative small scale sculpture of 'The Dying Cúchulainn' by Oliver Sheppard, with a wide Connemara marble base, raised on bronze ball feet. Mounted with a brass plaque, 'Eileen Lemass TD - Euro Election 1984'. Presented on Lemass's election to the European Parliament. 9 by 6 by 6in. (22.9 by 15.2 by 15.2cm) Eileen Delaney was born in Dublin in 1932. She was educated at St. Kevin's School, the National College of Art, Grafton Academy of Dress Designing and the Abbey Theatre School of Acting. She became involved in politics in 1974 when she was first elected to Dublin City Council. In 1976 she unsuccessfully contested the by-election in Dublin South-West caused by the death of her 47-year-old husband Noel Lemass, Jnr, son of former Taoiseach Seán Lemass and brother-in-law of future Taoiseach Charles Haughey. She was first elected to Dáil Éireann for Dublin Ballyfermot at the 1977 general election. In 1984 she was elected to the European Parliament. She retired from domestic politics at the 1987 election and from European politics in 1989 when she lost her European seat
Early 19th century bronze hand. A bronze hand, probably from a large statue. The hand of a scale commensurate with a statue of 13 feet (4m) in height. 5 by 13 by 10in. (12.7 by 33 by 25.4cm) Possibly part of one of the many statues removed, both legally and illegally, from Dublin after 1922. These included monuments to various monarchs, including William III, George I and Queen Victoria, as well as the Duke of Wellington, Lord Gough, Prince Albert, Lord Nelson and other British worthies.
1916 Rising, a bronze commemorative plaque for an outpost of the First Battalion, Dublin Brigade. A cast bronze plaque with gilt lettering, headed 'Eiri amach na Casca 1916' and marking the location of one of the outposts of the First Battalion, Dublin Brigade. Probably taken from a demolished building in Dublin. 18 by 12in. (45.7 by 30.5cm) The 1st battalion, under Edward 'Ned' Daly, occupied the Four Courts and surrounding buildings, while a company under Seán Heuston occupied the Mendicity Institution, across the River Liffey. The outposts in this area were chosen to protect the Four Courts which was subject to some of the most savage fighting between the Volunteers and the British Army.
