Ancient Roman Imperial Coins - The Quidenham (Norfolk) Hoard 2010 - Siliquae and Bronzes [150]4th century AD, group comprising the entire hoard, as reported and catalogued in detail by the British Museum, including: siliquae (6) of Valentinian I (1), Honorius (3), uncertain emperor (2, including a fragment), with bronze nummi of Constantine I, Constantine II, Valentinian I, Valens, Gratian, Valentinian II and Arcadius, with some Urbs Roma and a single barbarous radiate antoninianus; various reverses and mints represented, some uncertain issues; accompanied by the British Museum report and the coins contained in annotated paper envelopes, numbered to correspond with the report entries. Abdy, Richard, British Museum report (this hoard). Portable Antiquities Scheme, reference NMS-CSA931; Treasure Act, 1996, reference 2010-T59 (disclaimed). 385 grams total. Property of a West London gentleman, acquired 2011; ex Chalk collection, acquired in the 1960s, with authenticating document. Fine condition.
World Military - Germany - World War I - Kapitänleutnant Otto Weddigen - U Boat Action Silver Commemorative MedalUndated, World War I period (1915), by Ziegler and Grunthal. Obv: three-quarter bust with KAPITANLEUTNANT OTTO WEDDIGEN legend. Rev: u-boat at sea (during the action of 22 September 1914) with Iron Cross and branch above with DEM ANDENKEN DES HELDENMUTIGEN FUHRERS legend and S M UNTERSEEBOOTE U9 UND U29 in two lines to exergue; with German descriptive dealer`s ticket. 14.30 grams, 33mm. This medallion (also struck in bronze) posthumously celebrates Otto Weddigen, born 15 September 1882 in Herford, Westphalia; he died 18 March 1915, at sea off the Moray Firth, Scotland. His successes as a u-boat commander, including the sinking of three British armoured cruisers in about an hour during the second month of World War I, made him one of the most famous of the Imperial German submarine heroes. [No Reserve]Good extremely fine, few hairlines to fields. Scarce, especially in silver.
Roman Gold Crossbow Brooch4th century AD. A fabricated bow brooch with square-section transverse arm, three onion-shaped knops with beaded wire collars, scrolled loops to the upper face, rectangular-section bow with beaded wire collar, trapezoidal D-section footplate with notched upper edges; gold hinged pin and catchplate to the reverse. Cf. Hattatt, R. Iron Age and Roman Brooches, Oxford, 1985, item 505. 11 grams, 42mm (1 3/4"). From the Maurice Braham and Lord McAlpine collections; formerly in the collection of Henry Mossop, Lincolnshire, UK. This is a rare and unusual example of the highest skill in Roman jewellery making. The catchplate is solid gold; most of the remainder is thick gold sheet beaten over a base metal core, probably bronze. The knobs in particular show numerous tiny hammer marks. This item is accompanied by a positive XRF metal analysis report for the gold from Oxford X-ray Fluorescence Limited. Very fine condition.
