AFTER THE ANTIQUE, A BRONZE FIGURE OF MARCUS AURELIUS ON HORSEBACK LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY, ITALIAN On a Portoro marble base The bronze 16cm high, 20cm high overall, the base 14cm x 8cm Casts of this model have been recorded by the Roman bronze foundry of Giacomo and Giovanni Zoffoli. Usually signed, and mounted on the inscribed white marble base after Michelangelo's design- they were avidly collected by wealthy collectors on the Grand Tour. One, from a garniture de cheminée is held at Saltram House, Devon and is illustrated in "Souvenirs of the Grand Tour", Wildenstein, London, 1982, no.54.The original statue of Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD) is now held in the Musei Capitolini, Rome. It was erected circa 175 AD and is the only complete bronze statue of a pre-Christian Roman Emperor to have survived. Such statues were usually melted down for their bronze or destroyed by early Christians. This one survived because it was erroneously believed to depict Constantine, the first Christian Emperor. Condition Report: The marble base possibly a later replacement but displays the bronze well. The bronze with accretion of wear to patina as per age and fairly heavy use/handling.Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request. CLÉMENT LÉOPOLD STEINER (FRENCH, 1853-1899) A BRONZE FIGURE OF A FENCER 'ESCRIMEUR' FRENCH, LATE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY Depicted flexing a foil, his mask at his feet, varied patination, signed to the cast 'Steiner', and bearing title plaque "ESCRIMEUR PAR STEINER MEDAILLE D'OR", foundry inscription for "Pinedo Bronzier Paris", with a Paris bronze guarantee stamp 64.5cm high, the base 24cm wide
AFTER BENVENUTO CELLINI (FLORENCE, 1500-1571) A BRONZE FIGURE OF PERSEUS AND MEDUSA ON PLINTH SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY, ITALIAN The hero portrayed standing contrapposto, heroically nude except for winged sandals and a sash to his chest inscribed BENVENUTUS CELLINI FECIT, standing triumphantly above the slain figure of Medusa, and raising her decapitated head with his left hand, on rectangular figural plinth 98cm high overall, the base 14cm x 14.5cm Provenance: The collection of Sir William Whitfield CBE, 10 March 2020, Lot 38 Commissioned by Duke Cosimo I de' Medici and unveiled in 1554, Cellini's vivid contribution to the Loggia dei Lanzi on Florence's Piazza della Signoria is a tour de force of mid-16th century mannerism. The bronze showcases the many new ways in which mannerist sculptors were pushing the boundaries of the body. The decapitated figure of Medusa for instance is folded up in an unlikely pose, and is an example of what critics would come to refer to as a 'figura sforzata' or 'forced figure'. This iconic sculpture was much admired by Grand Tourists, and many 19th century souvenir casts of the work survive. Prince Albert for example acquired a full-size copy of the bronze by Clemente Capi at the Great Exhibition in 1855, which is now in the Royal Collection. The incorporation of Cellini's figural plinth in slightly smaller models, such as this one, is quite rareCondition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Some paler patination from this to raised and exposed extremities such as knees- shoulders, plinth edges- reverse of wing to ankle etc The whole in generally good condition but with some loose component elements. Base and top are separate pieces. He lacks sword bladePlease see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. AFTER A MODEL BY GIOVANNI BOLOGNA (GIAMBOLOGNA, 1529-1608) A BRONZE FIGURE OF A PEASANT RESTING ON HIS STAFF PROBABLY LATE 17TH OR EARLY 18TH CENTURY ITALIAN The figure wearing a short tunic, boots with floppy tops and a broad rimmed hat, with a small water barrel, set on an alabaster mounted, brass strung and mounted walnut base figure 13cm high including peg to base, the whole 23cm high, base 7.5cm square Provenance: Ex Kenneth Clark Collection The earliest reference to this figure- one of a set of four- came in 1601 when a silver version was loaned to Giambologna's former assistant Antonio Susini for casting in bronze. The document described it as follows: "a little figure in silver of a peasant with his hat and a staff, leaning upon his staff" (Una figuretta d'arg(en)to di un villano co(n) Capello co(n) bastoncino che sappoggia il su il bastone) Cf Giambologna 1529-1608: Sculptor to the Medici., Avery, Charles & Radcliffe, Anthony, published by UK: The Art Council, 1978. The earliest casts tend to be distinguished by having an oval base the figure stands on- together with clearer definition and space in the execution of staff and cloak. This later cast is closer to examples such as the one found at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire (NT 515066) but lacks the careful stippling and detailing.Condition Report: The whole presenting quite dirty- has been in a cupboard for some time. The patina showing paler/more golden areas from wear from handling and display. It has been suggested that some gilding may have been applied- then patination over it The stand dirty- associated- traces of former mounted object to top- one panel with crackWear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request.
