LORD FREDERIC LEIGHTON (British, 1830-1896)A bronze figure of 'The Sluggard'The nude male stretching, on square plinth base, inscribed THE SLUGGARD to the front, and signed Fred Leighton, with J W Singer & Sons Frome, foundry mark, 27cm wide, 16.5cm deep, 53cm high (10 1/2in wide, 6in deep, 20 1/2in high) Footnotes:Although perhaps better known as a fashionable Royal Academy painter of the late 19th century, Leighton took up sculpture in the 1870s and today is regarded as the father of New Sculpture in England. Leighton's Sluggard, also known as 'Athlete Awakening from Sleeping', was first executed in 1882. Giuseppe Valona, the Italian model who posed for 'An Athlete Struggling with a Python', was again used for the Sluggard. Edgcumbe Staley described the moment when: 'Giuseppe Valona, the model, a man of fine proportions, weary one day of posing in the studio, threw himself back, stretched out his arms and gave a great yawn. Leighton saw the whole performance and fixed it roughly in clay straight off.'A more refined life-size plaster was later exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1886 and was awarded a medal of honour when it was shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle three years later. A bronze cast of this plaster, acquired by Henry Tate in 1896, is now in the Tate Gallery. The Sluggard has obvious parallels with Rodin's 'Age of Bronze', exhibited in 1884 and it was perhaps this work which encouraged Leighton to revive his earlier model. The work later became one of the most popular Victorian statuettes when reduced-scale bronze editions were made by Arthur Leslie Collie and cast by the Singer Foundry. As this bronze is marked with just the J W Singer foundry mark it means we know it can only have been cast prior to 1927. Exhibited at The Art Gallery of New South Wales.Literature: S. Beattie, p.189 and 260, n.59; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, cat. no.39S. Jones, C. Although never apparently signing his works and producing in a variety of styles popular at the end of the 18th and start of the 19th century, he collaborated with numerous other craftsmen and scholars.By 1784 Galle had become extremely successful, producing mounts for furniture, clocks, and other objects in gilt bronze for the palaces of Fontainebleau, Versailles, Saint-Cloud, and Compiègne in his workshop and he was made a master bronzier in 1786.After the French Revolution, Galle continued to produce numerous pieces for Napoleon Bonaparte, receiving an order worth more than 65,000 francs for the Château of Saint-Cloud. As many of his clients were slow to pay their bills, however, he fell increasingly into debt. In 1811 he was even forced to write a begging letter to the government asking for its help and protection reminding them of the awards he had won, the large family he had to feed, and the four hundred employees who depended on him for their jobs. AFTER FREDERIC LEIGHTON, 1ST BARON LEIGHTON P.R.A., R.W.S., KNOWN AS SIR FREDERIC LEIGHTON (BRITISH, 1830-1896): A LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF 'AN ATHLETE WRESTLING A PYTHON'Of recent manufactureThe figure standing on a rectangular naturalistic base, signed, dated and numbered to one side F. LEIGHTON 1877 and dated 2018, numbered 1/6 and stamped with the foundry mark for brown patina, 53cm wide, 66cm deep, 101cm high (20 1/2in wide, 25 1/2in deep, 39 1/2in high) Footnotes:Provenance: Previously on display at Leighton House, 12 Holland Park Road, London. Today 'Athlete Wrestling with a Python' is noted as Leighton's sculptural masterpiece and was influenced by antique Greek sculpture, particularly 'The Laocoön' which formed part of the Vatican sculpture collection and which influenced the work of Michangelo.Representing a dramatic life and death scene of a classical male nude contending a python which is coiled around his left thigh and whose head is held at bay by his rigidly outstretched arm, the statues powerful and complex design commands a sense of suppressed energy and opposing forces momentarily balanced at a point of supreme tension. Although the striking realism of the figures anatomy was undoubtedly influenced by the sculptors of antiquity and the Renaissance it also owned a debt to contemporary French sculpture which gave it a naturalism far removed from the more pedestrian excesses of the neo-classical works produced by sculptors of a generation before. The model for the work was professional sitter Angelo Colorosi, who was a leading figure in the Italian group of professional male models in the later 19th century. From contemporary interviews which Leighton made with the Studio magazine in the early 1890s, the sculptor originally modelled it as a small-scale clay figure. However, the decision to turn it into a large-scale bronze was made on the encouragement of either Jules Dalou (French, 1838-1901) who was in exile in London during that time or Alphonse Legros (French, 1837-1911). Assisted by Leighton's protégé, Thomas Brock (British, 1847-1922), the full-size model first modelled in plaster and then cast in bronze by Cox & Son was then exhibited at the Royal Academy. Its influence was far reaching to the new generation of emerging New Sculpture artists including the young Brock, Hamo Thorneycroft, Alfred Gilbert, Edward Onslow Ford and George Frampton. The sculpture's popularity was sealed when it was purchased on behalf of the Tate by the Chantrey Bequest in 1877 and it won the gold medal when it appeared at the prestigious Exposition Universelle in Paris the following year. A monumental marble replica of the sculpture was subsequently commissioned by the wealthy Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen for the museum bearing his name in 1882 and much of the carving for this work was done by the New Sculpture sculptor Frederick Pomeroy (British, 1856-1924) at the start of his career whilst still working in Brocks studios.A Lifetime casting of Leighton's bronze figure of an Athlete Wrestling a Python (52.5cm high) was sold at Bonhams, New Bond Street, in the Important Design Sale, 5 April 2017, lot 32This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Following his death at the age of 55, the auction of his stock in January 1824 included models and casts by contemporary artists such as Flaxman and Chenu. Lot 294

A Napoleonic gilt-bronze medallion in a fitted case,19th century, depicting the emperor in profile, the red leather case inscribed in gilt lettering 'Donnee Par S. M. L'Empereur A Mr Roustam Ier Mameluc',7.7cm diametercase 9.5cm wide9.5cm deepThe inscription on the case of this medallion suggests it was presented by Emperor Napoleon to Roustam Raza, Premier Mameluc.Roustam Raza was Napoleon's Mamluk bodyguard and secondary valet. Having been taken into slavery from his home city of Tbilisi, Georgia, by the Egyptians, Roustam was gifted to Napoleon in 1798 by the sheikh of Cairo, following the successful French campaign in Egypt. He served the Emperor for 15 years until his exile. The use of the phrase 'premier Mameluc' in this inscription is notable and alludes to the fact that Napoleon had a second Mamluk, Mamluk Ali who joined his service in 1812, after which time Roustam would have referred to himself as the premier mamluk to denote his seniority. This may indicate that whoever inscribed the box knew of this arrangement and was probably following the owner's instructions, rather than someone simply inscribing a text.A letter from the British Museum, Department of Coins and Medals, dated December 1964, suggests that this medal matches the description of one shown in both Trésor de Numismatique and Bramsen which is said to have been produced in December 1813.Condition report: the case is worn with damage to the hinge and loss to the surface leather, the medallion with light surface scratches, the case possibly made later to house the medallion
