A Middle Bronze Age palstave axehead hoard. Found in Hampshire and recorded on the PAS database as HAMP-7A1CBA, Treasure number 2018T633.The PAS description for this hoard is given below:A hoard of ten complete/ incomplete/ fragmentary Middle Bronze Age palstave axeheads. The first discovered (no.1) was found c.18 inches below the surface, and below the plough soil. A further nine items were found in the plough soil over a c.50 metre area, 4-6 inches below the surface. The numbering of this catalogue replicates the numbering of the finds marked on their bags.1. Palstave axehead, copper alloy, unlooped, the casting seams have been trimmed and the blade has been forged and used, the axe is considerably more worn/eroded than the rest of the palstaves and palstave fragments from this find. It stands out among the group. Decoration consists of a triangular shaped, indentation with raised mid-rib emerging from it and continuing down the blade. The palstave has an elongated hexagonal cross-section. Dimensions: Length: 150mm; Blade width (of cutting blade): 58mm; Width (of butt): 20mm; Width across bar stop taken on top/bottom of palstave: 25mm; Weight: 483.4g.2. Palstave axehead, looped, copper alloy, in ‘as cast’ condition, with visible casting flashes and unsharpened blade. The loop is filled. The surfaces have a silvery appearance possibly due to high tin levels. The bottom of the palstave has a series of short (stitch-like) lines, running perpendicular to the casting seam. Decoration consists of a triangular motif from which emerges the mid-rib. Dimensions: Length: 160mm; Width (of cutting blade): 42mm; Width (of butt, which is broken/incomplete where casting jet removed): 25mm; Width across bar stop taken on top/bottom of palstave: 29mm; Weight: 369.2g.3. Palstave axehead, copper alloy, looped, with flanged sides and mid-rib decoration, with two short lines on either side of the mid-rib. The cutting edge of the blade is broken. The surfaces have a silvery appearance possibly due to high tin levels. The loop is filled. Dimensions: Length: 158mm; Blade width (cutting edge): 66mm; Width (of butt): 23mm; Width across bar stop taken on top/bottom of palstave: 25mm; Weight: 353.2g.4. Fragment of a palstave axehead, copper alloy, being the blade and body up to the bar stop, no trace of a loop, which one would expect to see on this portion of the axehead, if it had been present. Mid-rib emerging from and cutting through a triangular-shape decoration. Relatively neat casting flashes (but may not have been trimmed) but the blade is ‘as cast’ and unforged. Dimensions: Length: 103mm; Blade width (cutting edge): 49mm; Width (at broken end): 25mm; Width across bar stop taken on top/bottom of palstave: 28mm; Weight: 298.6g5. Fragment of a palstave axehead, looped, copper alloy, broken at the bar-stop, heavily corroded and it is not possible to see any evidence of cleaning/forging. The decoration and proportions of the axe are very similar to palstave No. 2. Dimension: Length: 98mm; Blade width (cutting edge): 41mm (broken); Weight: 280.8g.6. Fragment of a palstave axehead, copper alloy, being the butt end of a palstave. Dimensions: Length: 57mm; Width (max.) on top/bottom: 24mm; Width (of septum) (max.): 27mm; Butt thickness: 7mm; Weight: 93.2g.7. Fragment of a palstave axehead, copper alloy, being the butt end of a palstave. Dimensions: Length: 50mm; Width (max.) on top/bottom: 24mm; Width (of septum) (max.): 27mm; Butt thickness: 8mm; Weight: 131.42g.8. Fragment of a palstave axhead, copper alloy, being the butt end of a palstave. Dimensions: Length: 53mm; Width (max.) on top/bottom: 15mm; Width (of septum) (max.): 26mm; Butt thickness: 11mm; Weight: 94.8g.9. Ingot fragment, copper alloy, plate-like in shape. Dimensions: 45mm by 32mm, thickness: 11.5mm; Weight: 49.61g10. Casting jet/sprue, copper alloy, showing evidence for how the smith removed the jet from the cast object, showing that the sprue was half cut/sawn and then broken off. It is also possible to detect evidence of the ?clay mould into which the metal was poured. A notable object for revealing metalworking processes/technology. Dimensions: Thickness: 27mm; Width: 27 (min.) – 52mm (max.); Weight: 131.42g.Discussion: The objects described above were dispersed rather than from a closed deposit. They may all date to the Middle Bronze Age, although the casting waste material (Nos. 9-10) is less diagnostic. The palstaves (complete and fragmentary) are diagnostic and can be assigned to the Taunton phase of the Middle Bronze Age (i.e. c.1400-1300/1250 BC). The palstaves (Nos. 2-8) form a relatively coherent group and many, if not all, are unfinished/sharpened (see catalogue for details). Axe No. 1, in contrast, appears to have been used. Nevertheless I would recommend (on the balance of chronology and probability) that the group be taken as together a ‘find’ of Treasure and not split. Examples of similar hoards can be found in, for example, Rowlands (1976), and they are a relatively common find of the Middle Bronze Age in southern England.Notes:Conclusion: The objects detailed above (Nos. 1-10) qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act (1996) (Designation Order 2002), being a find of more than one base metal object of prehistoric (Bronze Age) date.Bibliography: Rowlands, M J, 1976 The Production and Distribution of Metalwork in the Middle Bronze Age of Southern Britain, British Archaeological Reports, British Series 31. Oxford: BARNote: Weights of objects are prior to cleaning (i.e. some with soil still adhering).Brendan O'Connor adds: "Palstaves 2 and 5 belong to the looped Norman type, likewise no 4 which is unlooped Norman. No 1, without a distinct stopridge, is probably a Werrar type (Rowlands Class 4), characteristic of the Isle of Wight. 5 is a bit unusual in that these side-flanged palstaves do not often have a loop. All this is indeed consistent with a Taunton phase hoard, of which there are several along the coast between Southampton and Portsmouth. Another was found 'near' Titchfield in 1897."Source: https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/917274

A fine archive of photographs and documents related to the work of notable Third Reich sculptor KURT SCHMID-EHMEN (1901-1968), who designed monumental 'Reichsadler' eagle sculptures for the German Pavilion at the 1937 Paris Exhibition, the Reich Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg and the 'Fedherrnhalle', and is credited with originating the design. The lot includes four original 3.25 x 4.5 photographs of the Reich Party Grounds, three of which show Schmid-Ehmen at work on the giant stone eagle installed thereat, two bearing Heinrich Hoffman back stamps; a group of seven approx. 6 1/2 x 8 in. photographs featuring images of Schmid-Ehmen's bust sculpture of Gauleiter and Deputy Prime Minister of Bavaria ADOLF WAGNER (1890-1944), showing it at various angles, printed on period-correct Agfa-Brovira paper, all smeared with traces of grey clay, indicating that they were used by Schmid-Ehmen as artist's references during the sculpting of the bust; a group of five b/w photo prints, ranging in size from 4 3/4 x 6 1/2 in. to 7 x 9 1/2 in. showing the resulting bust of Wagner as both the clay original and the final bronze copy, all again printed on period paper; a 12 x 15 1/2 in. print of Schmid-Ehmen's sculpture 'The Spear Carrier', which was later purchased by Adolf Hitler, unfortunately marred by a heavy horizontal crease; two 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. snapshots showing Schmid-Ehman viewing two additional sculptures; a 3 1/4 x 4 1/2 in. snapshot showing Adolf Wagner with an unidentified woman; a 3 1/2 x 4 in. snapshot showing two unidentified women, likely Schmid-Ehmen's wife and mother; and a 6 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. b/w/ photo portrait presenting a bust view of Schmid-Ehmen, likely taken immediately postwar. The lot is rounded out by three documents related to Schmid-Ehmen and his family, including a D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Munich, May 29, 1945, Hetty Schmid-Ehmen's 'Ausweis' issued by the American captors of the city one month following its fall. WITH: partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 12mo., Munich, July 6, 1945, a slip confirming that Kurt Schmid-Ehmen has registered himself with the police; and a war-date insurance card for a woman, on which Hetty Schmid-Ehmen is listed as the holder's employer. Several modern prints of photos showing Schmid-Ehmen and his work are also present. Overall, a fine grouping giving insight into the working process of one of the most notable sculptors of the Third Reich.
DACHAU LIBERATION GROUPING OF S/SGT. JOHN W. THOMPSON, 12TH ARMORED DIV. 'THE SS BOYS JUST SOAKED THE PRISONERS WITH GAS AND SET THEM ON FIRE...' A large grouping of photographs, letters, insignia and documents from Staff Sgt. John W. Thompson of the 12th Armored Division, present at the liberation of a Dachau sub-camp where Jewish prisoners were burned alive by their SS guard. The 12th Armored Division debarked in Le Havre on Nov. 15, 1944, and fought through France and Germany. The division fought fiercely during the Battle of the Bulge, taking 1,700 battle casualties during the fighting in and around Herrlisheim. It is recognized as a liberating unit of the Landsberg concentration camps (Kaufering I-XI) near the Landsberg Prison, sub-camps of Dachau concentration camp, on 27 April 1945. On 29 April 1945, the 12th also liberated Oflag VII-A Murnau, a German Army POW camp for Polish Army officers and rescued VIP French prisoners from an Alpine castle in Bavaria during the Battle for Castle Itter. Thompson was attached to an artillery battery and he wrote at least 22 letters home between the time he was awaiting transport to France and Dec. 11, 1945, some via V-Mail, most by hand and these are included in the lot. Of course, wartime content is camp related or censored but there remains much good reading, in part: '...[Dec. 26, 1944] We had a few German shells land in our position...The mess truck now has a few holes in it...I was under the half track at the time...The pieces that went through the track just missed my head...we have been shelling pill boxes [on the West Wall] for days and haven't even made a dent in them...[Feb. 12, 1945] They have been shifting us up and down the line...we haven't had a rest yet except for a few days...the snow is gone and the mud is a foot deep...I took a ride into Strasbourg...you can hear rifle fire from the center of town...they are paying as high as twenty dollars for a carton of cigarettes...[April 15, 1945] A few weeks ago we started out with Patton on his drive from Luxembourg to Worms...The reason for so little trouble is the speed of the spearhead...In some cases they [German defenders] didn't know we were there until we passed by. Those we passed couldn't do anything but give up...we didn't have enough MPs to take them to the rear so they put the German officers in charge...We didn't get many of the SS troops...The news of Roosevelt's death hit the boys pretty hard...We can't have anything to do with the German people...I went four days without sleeping...[ca. April 27, 1945] They started releasing the German prisoners...We didn't get enough of the SS boys to suit me...a few miles from the town of Krumbach...' While in Frankfurt on Aug. 9, 1945 Thompson sent his mother a particularly horrifying letter describing his arrival at the Dachau sub-camp at Landsberg. In part: '...I also got some film developed while I was here. I took these pictures at a Concentration [camp] just outside Landsbourg. We overran the place on the big drive with the 3rd Army. We got there about a half hour after the SS left. The whole place was in flames and for some time before we couldn't get near enough to see what had taken place. After the fire burned down, we found what you see in the pictures. We found a few still alive and they told us that the SS set the place on fire after they decided that it was too late to move the prisoners out. Most of them were so starved that they couldn't walk and there was no transportation around to haul them away. We couldn't understand how the place burned so fast, but after a few questions we found out that the SS boys just soaked the prisoners with gas and set them on fire. When we heard that, we just spent the rest of the day hunting Krauts. We found a few. What I did I would rather not talk about. We counted 450 bodies and we found out that they were all alive when they were set on fire...I carry a gun now when I go anywhere in hopes that some of these bastards will make a slip...when I'm alone it's all I can think about...' Four gruesome photographs are included which Thompson sent his mother, most 3.5 x 5 in., depicting the camp and focusing on the charred victims of the Nazis' brutality amidst the smoking ruins of the camp. Other items in the grouping include six additional photos, largely images with friends in the service, training, etc.; Thompson's Bronze Starr, shoulder patch, chest ribbons (European Theater with three battle stars), sergeant stripes and DUI pins; five larger printed photos including 'Acres of Bodies' at Landsberg; discharge papers, and some related ephemera. An important historic record. Kaufering was the largest of the Dachau subcamps and also the one with the worst conditions; about half of the 30,000 prisoners died from hunger, disease, executions, or during the death marches. It housed Jewish prisoners intended to be used for the production of Me-262 jet aircraft, but not a single aircraft ever left the plant.
A 1936 Berlin Olympics XI Olympiad Participants Bronze Medal, 2.75 in. dia., featuring five athletes pulling the ropes of the Olympic bell on the obverse, and the Olympic Bell embossed with the German eagle on the reverse. At the edge of the medal is the name of Otto Placzek, the Berlin sculptor who designed the medal. Interestingly and appropriately, the IOC noted the risk of 'politicizing' the Olympics and forbid Hitler and Goebbels from adding a swastika or any propaganda on official medals. Light traces of oxidation throughout, else very good.

Plain reverse, with a vertical pinback, all four prongs fully intact and reading in relief: 'Paul Kust Abzeichen Ordenfabrik Berlin, S.W. 19' 'Ges. Gesch.' 2 3/8 in. tall. Overall fine.

('For Proficiency In The H.J.'), the reverse RZM marked and maker marked 'M1/36' by Berg & Nolte. Unissued, with a stricken-out space where issuance number would be placed.
LUFTWAFFE NORTHERN FRANCE SERVICE MEDAL Medaille fur Treue Dienste im Feldluftgau Westfrankreich ('Luftwaffe Air District Belgium - Northern France Medal for Meritorious Achievements'). Bronze, 41 mm. diameter, the design made by a staff member from the Field Air District France. It was produced by Delande, Paris. The obverse shows a stylized map off France with a Luftwaffe eagle and the words 'ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND'. The reverse reads: 'FUR TREUE DIENSTLEISTUNGEN IM BEREICH DES FELDLUFTGAUKOMMANDOS WESTFRANKREICH' within laurel leaves. It appears only one of these medals was officially awarded, the remaining given to female staff members with the balance handed to Luftgaukommando VII. A few oxidized spots, else very good.
