A rare Chinese 'European-style' bronze tripod censer with cover. Elaborately decorated in relief with floral pattern and twin dragon head handles. Mark and period Qianlong to base. 31cm tall. Weight 3704 grams. This lot includes a copy of the Sotheby's November 5th catalogue which the bronze is included. Provenance: Sotheby's 'Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art' London 5th November 2008 - Lot 110
A quality Chinese 18th century polished bronze censer with twin tabbed loop handles and raised six Character mark of Xuande (1425-1435) to base on a later hardwood stand. Censer weight 1114 grams. Size 17cm width including handles, 9cm tall. Provenance: Property of late Captain George Wraith (1913-1972) RIBA, Architect and Surveyor (Pictured). During World War II as an officer in the Royal Engineers British Army, George was an avid collector and connoisseur of art and antiques particularly Asian Works of Art. The bronze censer was acquired in an English estate Auction in the early 1950's and stored in their Family home, Lumb Hall (pictured) in Drighlington, Yorkshire. George Wraith passed away in the 1970's and thus by decent the item was passed to his wife Margaret Wraith and then to the current owner, the son of George Wraith, Patrick Wraith I.Eng. FIET. LCGI.
A rare Chinese Qing dynasty Xianfeng period (1851-1861) 100 cash coin in bronze/brass Huang-tong 黃銅, Fujian province cast 1853-55 with 'Yong' chop mark to reverse top of rim an indistinct chop mark to the front rim and one faint chop to the edge of the coin. Total weight approx. 170 grams. Diameter 68mm. Condition overall good. Provenance: Gifted from the parents to the owner as a child in 1955 at the age of 11. The parents who owned an antique shop gave the coin to their son who kept the coin in a box until around 2012. See similar example sold by 'Stephen Album Rare Coins'
BRONZE TWO-PART HEADDRESS OF OSIRIS possibly late period, circa 500 BC, the stylized feathers originally mounted either side of the white or atef crowns and made with tenons for fixing to a statuette of some stature; the right hand feather has been restored and exhibits incised decoration and a double uraeus which would have originally been inlaid. EMPHEMERA AND MEDALLION / FOB GROUP relating to W Thewlis RND, who won the MM & Bar. A Bronze hallmarked Chirton school attendance medal to William Thewlis, presented in 1902 A Bronze hallmarked Chirton school attendance medal to William Thewlis, presented in 1903 A Silver hallmarked Chirton school attendance medal to William Thewlis, presented in 1905 A Silver Football Medal presented to Thewlis on 23rd November 1917, 'Hawke Bn Champions' Silver Fob ' Always Ready' 1919 Chirton Masonic Lodge medal to Bro Wm Thewlis. With brothers RND Silver Fob presented for winning a football match in France in 1918. The group comes with Williams original service papers and numerous other pieces of paper work relating to his life and his families. Such as apprenticeship documents and photographs. The group also comes with a large framed photograph of William. William Thewlis was born in Chirton, North Shields in January 1895. He attended Chirton School before going down the local pit as a Miner. During the Great War he enlisted in the Tyneside Division (TZ), Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, joining in June 1915. He became a Member of Hawke Bn Royal Naval Division RND. Thewlis first served in Imbros, before transferring to France in mid-1916. He was badly wounded to his left shoulder on 13th November 1916. The wound was so bad he didn't re-join his Bn until May 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal announced in the London Gazette on 24th September 1918 and the Bar on 15th January 1919. He was gassed during the German Spring Offensive in March 1918 and re-joined the Bn in August 1918.
French Gilt Bronze Large and Impressive Table Clock - by Samuel Marti circa 1880. Runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a sonorous gong with French high quality movement. The mark of Samuel Marti stamped to back plate. Clock size height 13.5" - 34 cm, width 8" - 20 cm, depth 8" - 20 cm. The dial and case in excellent condition. No gilt loss.
Leon Underwood (British 1890-1975) Bronze of the African Madonna, (Modern British Avant Garde Sculptor ) - Original bronze - the African Madonna with a fine brown Patination. Conceived in 1934/1935, signed to the base Leon. U., numbered IV-VIII, dated 36. on a gnarled walnut rustic wood base. total height 14 1/2''. Literature: The sculpture of Leon Underwood by Ben Whitworth, published Lund Humphries 2000 cat no. 93. African Madonna (variants) illustrated on page 60. His works can be seen in major British museums and public collections in the UK. He was the precursor of modern sculpture in Britain, attended the Slade School of Fine Art and the Royal College of Art. In the first World War he worked with Solomon Joseph Solomon, Norman Wilkinson and Paul Klee as a camoufleur creating observation posts camouflaged as trees and other objects. In 1921, Underwood opened the Brook Green School of Art in Hammersmith. Amongst his many students, he taught Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Moore later spoke of his indebtedness to Underwood's influence and teaching. He wrote a number of books on ancient African sculpture including Bronzes of West Africa, which were a great influence to him in later years for cycladic and African culture designs. Provenance - Mirfield Theological College of the Church of England, West Yorkshire. On Saturday October 22nd 2011, the monks at the college held an auction to raise money for the church renovations for the grade listed building. The bronze on offer was sold at this auction and mentioned in the catalogue and sold next to work by Eric Gill - entitled Lord Jesus Christ.
