A Chinese polished bronze censer, in the form of four peaches, with two twig handles, and applied four further small peaches and foliage, apocryphal Xuande seal mark, lacks cover, 12.5 cm high, and an associated stand, 18 cm high Provenance: Descent through the family, probably acquired by a family member who was in Consular Service in China during the late 19th century Report by RB A very thin (stress) crack to the rim, approx. 20-25 copper coloured dots, which might be holes that have been filled, mostly to just below the rim, one of the larger leaves might be missing its tip section, as the leaf has a serrated edge which doesn't go all the way round the tip, although this might be a design to have a broken leaf, one of the smaller leaves is similar, all should be able to be seen in photographs, approx. 1.275 kg

A GOOD JAPANESE SILVER, BRONZE AND ENAMEL VASE MEIJI 1868-1912 The bulbous body raised on three shaped feet and with a tall flared neck, decorated with a continuous scene of many cockerels, hens and chicks amid ferns and flowers, all applied on a buff ground and depicted in colourful enamels, the foot and neck with formal designs of flowerheads and scrolling tendrils in cloisonn? enamels, the base signed Tomomi in a rectangular cartouche, 28.2cm. Provenance: a private English collection, Wiltshire. Acquired from Percy Bates of 53 St Ann Street, Salisbury, on 14th July 1965. A copy of the original invoice is available.
A NEAR PAIR OF JAPANESE LACQUERED BRONZE VASES MEIJI 1868-1912 The tall pear-shaped bodies with an elongated neck and a short flaring foot, both decorated with a writhing dragon amongst flaming wisps in gold lacquer on a reddish-brown ground, both unsigned, together with wood stands, 29.8cm. (4)
TWO JAPANESE BRONZE IKEBANA VASES MEIJI/TAISHO PERIODS Both with tall slender bodies, one with with a rough surface imitating Bizen pottery ware, with two small frogs clambering up the side, an oval mark above the foot and with a two character seal mark to the base, the other decorated in mixed metals with scrolling tendrils, warabi (edible ferns), a small butterfly above, both 30cm.(2) Provenance: both from a Spanish private collection, Madrid. The vase with frogs purchased from the Kyoto Gallery, Brussels, on 15th December 2000. The other vase from Katie Jones Oriental Art, London, in the 1990s.
TWO JAPANESE BRONZE VASES MEIJI/TAISHO PERIODS The largest in two parts, the bulbous body with a tall circular neck and applied with scroll handles, raised on three elegantly curved feet, with a removable circular tray wedged at the top signed with a two character mark, the other with a tall flared body and the surface mottled with brown and red splashes, raised on cloud-shaped feet, 38cm and 21.5cm respectively. (3) Provenance: both a Spanish private collection, Madrid. The tallest vase purchased from the Kyoto Gallery, Brussels, in the 1990s, and the other from Peter Wain, London, in the 1990s.

A JAPANESE SILVERED BRONZE MIRROR EDO 1615-1868 The circular body cast in high relief with a central roundel of cranes and their young under large pine, prunus and magnolia trees, feeding from a turtle in the centre, the inside of the rim with a continuous design of seashells amongst waves and branches of bamboo, signed Tenka Morita and with another inscription, 12.7cm dia.
TWO JAPANESE CAST-IRON KETTLES AND COVERS, TETSUBIN 19TH/ 20TH CENTURY One cast as a tied straw bale, one side with sprays of peonies and the other with calligraphy, the other kettle with a short cylindrical body decorated with a flowering branch of prunus and cursive script, both with a bronze lid topped with a reticulated finial, the first signed Ryubundo zo and the other Kiryudo zo, 20.5cm max. A JAPANESE BRONZE INCENSE BURNER, KORO MEIJI 1868-1912 Cast as a crouching egret, the lid with three apertures, together with two rectangular iron and mixed metal panels applied with sprays of flowers and butterflies, and a small metal fitting, possibly a menuki, modelled as a rat climbing upon a large daikon, all unsigned, 17.5cm max. (5) Provenance: from the collection of Ernst Michel (d.1949), an architect working in Germany in the first half of the 20th c. and involved with Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus Movement.
A JAPANESE BRONZE FIGURE OF DARUMA, OKIMONO MEIJI 1868-1912 The Father of Zen Buddhism depicted standing, draped in long flowing robes and with his hands held in a gesture of prayer and tucked under the fabric, his eyes downcast and with his hair arranged in tight curls, raised on a modern plinth, unsigned, 30cm.
A PAIR OF JAPANESE BRONZE FIGURES OF GARDIAN DEITIES, NIO MEIJI 1868-1912 The Kongorikishi typically depicted with wrathful expressions, Misshaku Kongo with his mouth open and holding the mallet vajra-pani, Naraen Kongo carrying a short staff, both standing on rockwork and wearing flowing skirts with long ribbons, their muscular chests left bare, with highlights cold-painted in red, 55.5cm. (2) These figures are modelled after Ungyo and Agyo, the two large 13th c. cypress figures of benevolent gardian Kings at Todaiji temple, Nara.
A JAPANESE NETSUKE OF A KITSUNE FOX BY KAZUO MIZUTANI (B.1932) 20TH CENTURY The fox dressed as an itinerant monk, with a large hood, long robes and a wooden stick, its head turned to dexter and with the eyes inlaid, together with a small bronze fox depicted sitting on its haunches, 7cm and 3.8cm respectively. (2) Provenance: from the collection of Frank Robertson (d.2014). The fox-priest purchased in Tokyo in 1988 directly from Kazuo Mizutani.
A fine and very rare Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) gilt bronze cloisonné scribe's water dropper, probably early seventeenth century, the cylindrical-form pot with flared rim decorated with two five-clawed dragons upon a turquoise ground. Dimensions : Height including the dropper finial 79.07 mm. Diameter across the base 57.20 mm, diameter across the top 52.04 mm, height not including the dropper 60.65 mm, weight not including the dropper 342.3g, gross weight 348.8g. CONDITION REPORT: The item is in very good condition showing time-aged natural wear and discolouration, rubbing to the gilding in keeping with age along with minor surface scuffs to the metal. Detail is good and crisp, in keeping with age some cloisonne cells showing pitting and tiny vacant patches with no signs of damages, cracks or chips. This item appeared recently as a feature in the BBC Antiques Road Show from the Civic Centre, Newcastle Upon Tyne, series 40, episode 26.

A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE IRON-RED GROUND VASE JIAQING 1796-1820 Decorated with four butterflies and four cartouches containing scenes of boys in a garden painted in coloured enamels, with scrolling gilt floral and foliate designs against the vibrant red ground, the interior and base turquoise, a label for the Max Robertson Collection No.A-224-B to the base, together with a bronze stand, 20cm. (2) Max Robertson (1915-2009) was a sports commentator, presenter, author and collector. He was famous as the voice of Wimbledon and covered major news events including the coronation of Elizabeth II. Robertson also presented the antiques programme Going for a Song. Despite selling his collection of mostly Transitional Chinese porcelain at Sotheby's in 1964, Robertson continued to collect and was a client of Bluett's mainly between 1961 and 1970. A CHINESE ARCHAIC BRONZE JUE LATE SHANG DYNASTY The sides of the wine vessel cast with two large taotie masks reserved on a leiwen ground, one side with a C-shaped strap handle issuing from a bovine mask, the body rising to a pointed tail and curved spout flanked by two posts with waisted caps, all raised on three tall triangular-section legs resembling blades, the bronze with a dark greenish-brown patina, with a paper label for the H J Lowenthal Collection, 110, 21.3cm, 806g. Provenance: formerly in the collection of Dr Robert Heilbroner, New York, 1960s; then no.2 in the Summer Exhibition 2010 at Roger Keverne Ltd; and then the collection of Mr H J Lowenthal, no.110. Dr Robert Heilbroner (1919-2005) was a famous economist and was a professor of economics at the New School for Social Research in New York for over twenty years. A TIBETAN BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA 14TH/15TH CENTURY The eleven-faced Bodhisattva stands on a double lotus base, with two hands in prayer and the others holding a mala, a kundika, and flowers, wearing a dhoti with incised decoration and jewellery inlaid with later coloured jewels, with a deer skin hanging over his left shoulder, the back of the figure and pedestal incised with floral patterns, the original baseplate in place, 26cm, 1.5kg. Provenance: previously acquired in Hong Kong in the 1980s; and then Christie's New York, 14th September 2010, lot 60. A CHINESE LACQUERED GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF TIANGUAN 16TH/17TH CENTURY The heavenly official sits wearing a tall hat and holding a hu tablet before him, bearing a stern expression on his face which is framed by his elongated earlobes, his long flowing robes decorated with gilt and red lacquer and incised with swirling designs, the face and hands picked out in gilt, together with a wood stand, 36.8cm, 4.7kg.
