A CHINESE GOLD AND TURQUOISE INLAID BRONZE GARMENT HOOK of curved tapering form with a preying mantis head forming the hook, the faceted upper surface inlaid with a geometric design, Warring States period, 8.5" long. Provenance: Private collection, West Dorset. A comparable garment hook is extant in the Brooklyn Museum (68.185.11).
A CHINESE BRONZE CENSER AND OPENWORK COVER, the rounded body cast with a lower band of petal motifs on a cross-hatched ground, above a straight stem and circular foot cast in low relief with archaic scrolls, the openwork cover forming three stylised interlinked birds whose beaks terminate in a tri-lobe top, Han Dynasty, 7.5" high. Provenance: Private collection, London.
A CHINESE BRONZE 'GARLIC-HEAD' VASE, the naturalistic head curved to one side and revealing a top aperture, the neck with an applied grip band above the plain rounded body and slightly spreading foot, Han Dynasty, 13.5" high. Provenance: Private collection, London. Han Dynasty garlic-neck vases are not uncommon. However, this vase with its' distinctive curved top appears unrecorded in the literature. It may perhaps have been used as a ewer or flask rather than a vase.
A SMALL CHINESE BRONZE CALLIGRAPHIC DISH, of square form with canted corners, the upper surface decorated in relief with a poem relating to Spring and dated the seventh year of the Xuande reign, the underside with four low ruyi feet surrounding a central relief Imperial mark within a medallion of two dragons chasing a pearl, Ming, 6.5" from corner to corner. Provenance: Private collection, Dorset. This unusual bronze dish appears to have been made for Imperial use during the Xuande reign. Its function would probably have been to accompany a censer. A directly comparable example is recorded as extant in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, USA (1991.204).
A VERY LARGE PAIR OF CHINESE BRONZE TEMPLE CENSERS, the rectangular bodies decorated in high relief with dragons, phoenix and other mythical creatures, the large handles formed as two opposing flame-enlivened dragons, the lower bodies with panels of incised script above ornate mask bases, Qing, 18th/19th century, 26" high (2). The script around the bottom of these censers appears to bear good wishes for the future offspring of a family.
A JAPANESE LARGE BRONZE HERON by Masatoki of Kyoto, the bird stepping forward and with its' head turned upwards to the right, the body with finely modelled overlapping feathers, signed underneath the hindquarters, Meiji, 44" high. Provenance: Sotheby, King and Chasemore, West Sussex, 30th April 1980, Lot 1596. Private collection, East Dorset.
