A GOOD JAPANESE SILVER, BRONZE AND ENAMEL VASE MEIJI 1868-1912 The bulbous body raised on three shaped feet and with a tall flared neck, decorated with a continuous scene of many cockerels, hens and chicks amid ferns and flowers, all applied on a buff ground and depicted in colourful enamels, the foot and neck with formal designs of flowerheads and scrolling tendrils in cloisonn? enamels, the base signed Tomomi in a rectangular cartouche, 28.2cm. Provenance: a private English collection, Wiltshire. Acquired from Percy Bates of 53 St Ann Street, Salisbury, on 14th July 1965. A copy of the original invoice is available.

TWO JAPANESE BRONZE IKEBANA VASES MEIJI/TAISHO PERIODS Both with tall slender bodies, one with with a rough surface imitating Bizen pottery ware, with two small frogs clambering up the side, an oval mark above the foot and with a two character seal mark to the base, the other decorated in mixed metals with scrolling tendrils, warabi (edible ferns), a small butterfly above, both 30cm.(2) Provenance: both from a Spanish private collection, Madrid. The vase with frogs purchased from the Kyoto Gallery, Brussels, on 15th December 2000. The other vase from Katie Jones Oriental Art, London, in the 1990s.

TWO JAPANESE BRONZE VASES MEIJI/TAISHO PERIODS The largest in two parts, the bulbous body with a tall circular neck and applied with scroll handles, raised on three elegantly curved feet, with a removable circular tray wedged at the top signed with a two character mark, the other with a tall flared body and the surface mottled with brown and red splashes, raised on cloud-shaped feet, 38cm and 21.5cm respectively. (3) Provenance: both a Spanish private collection, Madrid. The tallest vase purchased from the Kyoto Gallery, Brussels, in the 1990s, and the other from Peter Wain, London, in the 1990s.

A PAIR OF JAPANESE BRONZE FIGURES OF GARDIAN DEITIES, NIO MEIJI 1868-1912 The Kongorikishi typically depicted with wrathful expressions, Misshaku Kongo with his mouth open and holding the mallet vajra-pani, Naraen Kongo carrying a short staff, both standing on rockwork and wearing flowing skirts with long ribbons, their muscular chests left bare, with highlights cold-painted in red, 55.5cm. (2) These figures are modelled after Ungyo and Agyo, the two large 13th c. cypress figures of benevolent gardian Kings at Todaiji temple, Nara.

A JAPANESE NETSUKE OF A KITSUNE FOX BY KAZUO MIZUTANI (B.1932) 20TH CENTURY The fox dressed as an itinerant monk, with a large hood, long robes and a wooden stick, its head turned to dexter and with the eyes inlaid, together with a small bronze fox depicted sitting on its haunches, 7cm and 3.8cm respectively. (2) Provenance: from the collection of Frank Robertson (d.2014). The fox-priest purchased in Tokyo in 1988 directly from Kazuo Mizutani.

A fine and very rare Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) gilt bronze cloisonné scribe's water dropper, probably early seventeenth century, the cylindrical-form pot with flared rim decorated with two five-clawed dragons upon a turquoise ground. Dimensions : Height including the dropper finial 79.07 mm. Diameter across the base 57.20 mm, diameter across the top 52.04 mm, height not including the dropper 60.65 mm, weight not including the dropper 342.3g, gross weight 348.8g. CONDITION REPORT: The item is in very good condition showing time-aged natural wear and discolouration, rubbing to the gilding in keeping with age along with minor surface scuffs to the metal. Detail is good and crisp, in keeping with age some cloisonne cells showing pitting and tiny vacant patches with no signs of damages, cracks or chips. This item appeared recently as a feature in the BBC Antiques Road Show from the Civic Centre, Newcastle Upon Tyne, series 40, episode 26.

A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE IRON-RED GROUND VASE JIAQING 1796-1820 Decorated with four butterflies and four cartouches containing scenes of boys in a garden painted in coloured enamels, with scrolling gilt floral and foliate designs against the vibrant red ground, the interior and base turquoise, a label for the Max Robertson Collection No.A-224-B to the base, together with a bronze stand, 20cm. (2) Max Robertson (1915-2009) was a sports commentator, presenter, author and collector. He was famous as the voice of Wimbledon and covered major news events including the coronation of Elizabeth II. Robertson also presented the antiques programme Going for a Song. Despite selling his collection of mostly Transitional Chinese porcelain at Sotheby's in 1964, Robertson continued to collect and was a client of Bluett's mainly between 1961 and 1970. A CHINESE ARCHAIC BRONZE JUE LATE SHANG DYNASTY The sides of the wine vessel cast with two large taotie masks reserved on a leiwen ground, one side with a C-shaped strap handle issuing from a bovine mask, the body rising to a pointed tail and curved spout flanked by two posts with waisted caps, all raised on three tall triangular-section legs resembling blades, the bronze with a dark greenish-brown patina, with a paper label for the H J Lowenthal Collection, 110, 21.3cm, 806g. Provenance: formerly in the collection of Dr Robert Heilbroner, New York, 1960s; then no.2 in the Summer Exhibition 2010 at Roger Keverne Ltd; and then the collection of Mr H J Lowenthal, no.110. Dr Robert Heilbroner (1919-2005) was a famous economist and was a professor of economics at the New School for Social Research in New York for over twenty years.
