TWO CHINESE CERAMIC ITEMS AND A BRONZE TRIPOD INCENSE BURNER AND STAND MING AND QING DYNASTY One ceramic item a Longquan celadon dish, moulded with a floral spray to the well and narrow petals to the cavetto, the other a blue and white 'Swatow' jar painted with insects, ducks and other birds in a landscape, the incense burner with two loop handles rising from the rim, with a six character Xuande mark to the base, the stand cast as a lotus leaf raised on three feet, 31.4cm max, the incense burner and stand 1.2kg. After Max Le Verrier (1891-1973), a bronze Verdigris danseuse au ruban titled 'Janle', signed to base, set to a marble plinth, 32cm high CONDITION REPORT:The piece is in good overall condition showing minor wear to the patinated finish and the odd casting mark, but no visible damage to the figure or the plinth.
After Pierre Le Faguays (French 1892-1962), an Art Deco bronze Verdigris figure of Olympia, modelled leaping with arms raised, set to a sloping stepped plinth inscribed ?Fayral? (pseudonym of Le Faguays), 27cm high CONDITION REPORT:The piece appears to be in good overall condition, showing minor wear to the patinated finish and the plinth, but no visible evidence of damage or repair.
A large 18th/19th century bronze buddha, modelled seated and laughing, with all-over patination and hollow cast interior, 39cm highCondition report; Wear is visible throughout the piece. Splits and holes in areas including crevasses are visible throughout. Losses are multiple and can be seen but not limited to the crown and base. A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE BRONZE VASE BY KIMOURA TOUN MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The baluster-shaped body with a flared rim and cast with a scaly dragon emerging from crashing waves, its ferocious head in high relief; raised on an impressive stand shaped as another writhing dragon; the vase signed Toun kore wa tsukuru in a rectangular cartouche underneath the dragon's tail, 56.5cm overall. A PAIR OF JAPANESE BRONZE VASES AND COVERS BY KIMOURA TOUN MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Of bulbous form and each raised on a flaring foot, both vases cast with a dragon in high relief emerging from scrolling clouds and fire wisps, the rims and feet cast with bands of key fret and stylised reishi mushrooms, the covers with spiraling waves extending to become the knops, the insides gilded, both signed in a rectangular cartouche Kimoura Toun, raised on associated wood stands, 35cm overall. (6) Provenance: from the collection of Professor Anne Birrell (1950-2020). Professor Birrell taught Chinese and Chinese literature at Cambridge University and the City University of New York. Her publications include Popular Songs and Ballads of Han China, New Songs from a Jade Terrace, and Chinese Mythology: An Introduction.

A JAPANESE INLAID BRONZE VASE BY THE NOGAWA COMPANY MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The tall bulbous body decorated with a large chrysanthemum flower and a smaller bud, the blooms, stems and leaves rendered in mixed metals including silver on the russet-brown ground, the base with a mark for the Nogawa Company and with a three character signature to the side, 17.5cm.
A JAPANESE INLAID BRONZE VASE BY JOMI EISUKE II (1839-1899) MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Of tall baluster shape, the body decorated with a continuous design of many pines on the slope of a hill and with a full moon emerging from behind them, the trees rendered in shakudo inlays in low relief and the celestial body in silver, all on the mottled russet-brown ground, the base with a seal for Jomi sei, 25cm.
TWO BRONZE SEALS EDO PERIOD, 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY The first in three parts fitting inside each other, modelled as a sage seated in a pavilion beneath a rocky outcrop from which grow pines, with some remnants of gilt; all three matrices cut with characters, one inscribed Kihan Seshin (a retainer at the Kishu domain) and Kuki Shi In (seal of Kuki, a noble name); the other seal shaped as a double gourd raised on a square plinth, with scrolling tendrils and smaller fruits growing from the stalk, the matrix left uncut; 4.7cm and 4.3cm respectively. A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE BRONZE ROOF TILE MODELLED AS A SHACHIHOKO PLEASE NOTE THIS LOT IS INSCRIBED YOSHITAKE ZO (MADE BY YOSHITAKE) 美æ¦é€ EDO PERIOD, LATE 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY The massive dragon-fish depicted with its tail pointing upwards towards the sky, its dragon head with bushy eyebrows and long whiskers, the carp-like body modelled with four large pectoral fins and crisp scales, a spiny dorsal fin and with a flared tail, with remnants of gilt, 160cm. Provenance: formerly an American private collection. The dragon-fish was displayed on the roof of a large mansion in Rhode Island, New England. Shachihoko are sea monsters believed to cause rain. They are often used as ornaments on Japanese rooftops to protect buildings against fire.
A JAPANESE BRONZE OKIMONO OF A DOVE ON A ROOF TILE MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The bird perched on an oni-gawara, a traditional roof tile of cylindrical shape with a demon-shaped finial, the grimacing figure with sharp fangs and short horns, the back with ivy leaves and tendrils and with mitsudomoe comma-like swirl symbols to the side, 14.3cm.

A LARGE JAPANESE BRONZE KORO OF MONJU BOSATSU BY GENRYUSAI SEIYA MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURY The Bodhisattva seated on an elephant and looking thoughtful as they hold a handscroll; the figure is depicted wearing loose robes and elaborate jewellery, forming the cover of the incense burner; the mount's caparison and harness embellished with strings of beads and floral patterns, inset with small mother of pearl and stone buttons, some later replacements; with an inner liner and raised on an oval wood stand, the belly of the pachyderm signed in a square seal Genryusai Seiya zo, 43cm max. A LARGE BRONZE OKIMONO OF A HAWK BY THE MARUKI COMPANY MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The bird of prey naturalistically rendered, perched on a gnarly piece of wood with its head slightly turned to the side, finely cast with details in shakudo and the pupils in gilt, signed in a square reserve underneath the tail feathers Nihon kuni Maruki sei, 53.3cm. (2) Provenance: from the collection of the late Hubert René Joseph Georges Faure (1919-2020). Hubert Faure was the first husband of Elizabeth (Bessie) de Cuevas, who married when she was nineteen. Bessie was the daughter of Margaret Rockefeller, granddaughter of John D Rockefeller. A bronze bird entitled Poule Cayenne by François Pompon (1855-1933) from the same collection was sold at Christie's Paris on 14th April 2021, lot 184. See lot 358 in this sale for another piece from the same collection. The Maruki Works Art Factory was one of the most renowned bronze studios during the Meiji period. Located in Tokyo, the studios employed many of Japan's finest artists.
A JAPANESE SILVERED-BRONZE MODEL OF A CRANE BY MASAAKI MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Naturalistically cast, the elegant bird stands with its head turned to the left, its beak slightly open; its plumage rendered in mixed metal and with the eyes inlaid in gilt, signed Masaaki underneath its tail feathers, attached to an oval black lacquer stand, 44.5cm overall.
AN IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE JIZAI OKIMONO MODEL OF A HAWK MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Realistically rendered, the raptor with an articulated head, wings, tail feathers and talons, the eyes inlaid in gilt with black pupils and the beak possibly in shibuichi, with hidden numbers inscribed underneath the top of the feathers, 23.5cm. Provenance: from the collection of the late Hubert René Joseph Georges Faure (1919-2020). Hubert Faure was the first husband of Elizabeth (Bessie) de Cuevas, who married when she was nineteen. Bessie was the daughter of Margaret Rockefeller, granddaughter of John D Rockefeller. A bronze bird entitled Poule Cayenne by François Pompon (1855-1933) from the same collection was sold at Christie's Paris on 14th April 2021, lot 184. See lot 355 in this sale for another item also from the same collection. There are only a small number of iron articulated hawks recorded. A jizai okimono bird of prey by Myochin Kiyoharu is on display at Tokyo National Museum and another unsigned iron hawk from a private French collection is illustrated in Harada Kazutoshi, Jizai Okimono, p.058, no.19.
