(10.2cm.) diameter; mounted with the Great Exhibition bronze medal of 1851 of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, designed by William Wyon, and from which Millais derived the image.. * * Provenance: Christie's, London 27th February 2007, 27, £9,000; Private collection, Jersey.. * ** It is thought that the drawing was made around the time of Millais' marriage on 3rd July 1855 to Euphemia, known as Effie, who had previously been married to the art critic John Ruskin. Millais and Effie had fallen in love while holidaying in Scotland with Ruskin in 1853 and she successfully had her marriage annulled on the grounds of non consummation. This intensely private and sensitive matter was reported in detail by the press eager to satisfy the public's curiosity. To escape the gossip surrounding their marriage Millais and Effie spent the first six years of their marriage in Scotland. Effie often appeared in Millais' paintings, most famously in The Order of Release (Tate Britain) which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853.. * Although born in Southampton, Millais spent his childhood in Jersey and would always describe himself as a Jerseyman.. * Good condition.

A Thailand bronze Buddha, raised on a carved hardwood stand, possibly 18th century. Overall height 21.5 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The wooden base has signs of wear to the feet, one of the small feet has a slight loss and discolouration. Overall, the rest of the base is sound with no structural damage. There is a repair and damage to the top of the Buddha's head, it would appear that an area has been re-soldered, so overall condition is not original, structurally now sound but with repairs. Also, some pitting and other imperfections to the bronze, many of these from its first firing. Also, the patina has been rubbed in places through handling over time.
A Japanese bronze cockerel and hen, raised on a wooden base. Overall height 37 cm, width of base 29 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The wooden base is structurally sound with no damage but there is evident wear to the feet and along the top of the rectangular surface which the chickens stand on. There is also a clear repair to the side at the back of the stand. The hens themselves are not stable on the stand and the larger cockerel has damage to his legs, one of which is split all the way through and loose, so the overall condition for this item is not good, there is also a wing missing in entirety from the cockerel.
A pair of bronze boxing hares, each raised on a shaped marble base. Height 30 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both these bronzes are structurally sound with some areas of wear to the patina of the bronzes as you would expect with age and handling. Both bases are intact, one base has a small repair to the marble side and a hairline crack to the front. Otherwise the condition is generally good.
