Rare 12th Century medieval figure of St John, copper alloy, solid cast, engraved and gilded: finished "in the round" pinned from below, figure circa 1180 of St John mourning the crucifixion. The young apostle is shown in the traditional pose of a mourner, head on hand, his book supported with a broad swathe of drapery held across his left arm, the hair in soft waves and cut short into a close cap, traces of gliding present. The figure 8.5cms tall, mounted on an acrylic stand. This bronze was said to have been found at Totternhoe Castle, Bedfordshire. For similar example see English Romanesque Art 1066-1200 Hayward Gallery.
