A 17th Century bronze mortar, probably London Whitechapel Foundry, of typical flared form with two bands of decoration comprising a shell, a leaf and a 'whiplash' scroll to the waist and upper rim, on a moulded spreading foot, and mounted on a later wooden base, unmarked, with later pestle, height 13cm, diameter 18cm.
Louis XV style, France, 19th century.Rosewood veneer, bronze and marble.Measurements: 77 x 41 x 52 cm.Neoclassical design table made of rosewood. The table is structured on four legs with a high, warped profile, with bronze decoration in vegetal profile on the tops (in the lower area and on the shoulders). Under the tabletop, a drawer can be seen in the front area of the piece. Finally, the table is topped with a tabletop made of veined marble, with bronze decoration at the corners in the shape of a leaf.The Louis XVI style, which flourished in France in the second half of the 18th century, was inspired by classical antiquity and was one of the most representative of Neoclassicism. This fame and value meant that, subsequently, it continued to be one of the most frequent sources of inspiration for other decorative objects.

Sotheby Parke Bernet, Mentmore House, May 1977. Acquired by Bernard Nevill (1930-2019), Fonthill, Wiltshire from the Mentmore sale. Catalogue Note Mentmore Towers, known as Mentmore, was built as a country house between 1852-54 for Baron Mayer Amschel de Rothschild (1818-1874). The house was designed in the late 16th / early 17th century style called 'Jacobethan' and was home to the extensive Rothschild collection of art and antiques. When the contents of Mentmore were sold in 1977, Bernard Nevill bought the present curtains and a large number of other furnishings for his home, the converted stables on the Fonthill Estate, Wiltshire. Nevill (1930-2019) was a professor of textiles at the Royal College of Art, a textile designer and a director of design at Liberty's, where he produced two exciting ranges of printed textiles, 'Islamic' (1963) and 'Jazz' (1964). He was an aesthete and a great collector and he felt he was rescuing beautiful objects when he had no use for them. The curtains featured in an article on Nevill in the World of Interiors magazine in February 2020.
