A Japanese sword katana, blade 25¼”, saya black leather bound with plain sheet brass mounts, two hanging rings, locking stud to blade, bronze tsuba with solid square cog design, plain triple disc menuki. A 15.24mm Russian Krnka breech loading SS military rifle, 41¼” overall, barrel 24”, various serial numbers on breech, barrel and mounts, bronze frame with hinge up breech block, back action lock dated 1865, the frame and buttplate tang impressed with small Imperial eagle. WO & generally GC (well worn overall with some moderate to deep pitting, stock refinished)
A pair of gilt bronze candlesticks of neo-classical form, probably English, 19th century, after a design by Giovanni Battista Piranesi and similar to the Newdigate candelabrum in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, the columns with three cast herons above ram's heads and pendant swags, on triangular bases supported by winged lion's paw feet, each 40cm (15 3/4in) high (see front cover illustration)
Enzo Plazzotta, A female bust, bronze unsigned, 49cm Enzo Plazzotta (1921-1981) was born in Mestre, near Venice. He initially studied architecture and sculpture in Milan, his studies were, however, interrupted by World War II. He became a partisan leader near Lake Maguire. After the war he was commissioned by the Italian Committee of Liberation to commemorate their collaboration with British Special Forces. He presented the statuette personally to the Special Forces Club in London and stayed, falling for the English freedom of political thought. He became known for portraiture, horse and dance subjects.
