D: G. RO: IM: SA'. On the back, a monogram 'MCG' is engraved which might be attributable to Caspar Gras (1585-1674). The CG being obvious, the M might refer to Bad Mergentheim where he was born and where he worked at the court of Archduke Maximilian III.Ê German-born sculptor Caspar Gras was one of the finest metalworkers of the 1600s in Northern Europe. After learning the craft of goldsmithing from his father, he became an apprentice embosser at the court of Archduke Maximilian III in Bad Mergentheim. By 1610 he was promoted to Court Embosser and soon received most of the court's commissions. These included not just relief sculpture, but also life-size figural works, equestrian statues, and fountains.Ê Gras also created many Kunstkammer pieces, which generally were small-scale works designed to be incorporated into a collector's accumulation of precious and virtuoso art objects. He was now considered one of the most renowned bronze sculptors in the Tyrol, the Alps of western Austria. Yet, the death of Emperor Leopold V in 1632 and the Thirty Years' War left the area in a severe financial depression, so Gras received few commissions in his later years and is primarily known from his earlier work. The monarch is known to have praised Prieur's small bronzes, and it is likely that the artist had access to the royal collection's bronze models by Giambologna (1529-1608), whose Pacing Bull may have provided the inspiration for the present work. The first great master of exquisite bronze statuettes to have worked in Giambologna's tradition in France, Prieur has since been highly sought-after by collectors. This type of helmet is named after the region of Montefortino in Italy where an example was excavated in a Celtic burial. AN UNUSUAL EGYPTIAN BRONZE AMULET OF SELKIS, LATE PERIOD, CIRCA 664-332 B.C., the human-headed goddess in the form of a scorpion, wearing a sun disk between cows horns, attachment loop at the back of the head, 3.8cm high, 3cm wide, 8.3cm deepFootnotes:Provenance:Private collection, France. with Arteas Ltd, Paris. Acquired from the above 11 June 2009.Selkis was worshipped as a goddess of medicine, protection and, most importantly, healer of venomous stings and bites through her association with scorpions. As bites and stings could prove fatal in ancient Egypt, the goddess also became associated with the underworld and the dead. Her name is commonly invoked to protect the embalmed remains of intestines stored in the canopic jar representing Falcon-headed Qebehsenuef. For a similar depiction of the goddess as a scorpion see an example in the Louvre, Paris, acc. no. N 5017. She is more usually represented in human form with a scorpion headdress, as seen in the various lapis Selkis amulets in the British Museum, for example acc. no.
