An oak and teak Ships Capstan, late 17th or early 18th century. Discovered in 2005 in the roof space of a C18th whale oil factory that was being demolished in the old whaling port of Burela on the Costa del Muerte in Galicia Spain. Believed to be off a Dutch vessel with it’s intaglio of tulips on the cap head on top of the capstan which was once inlaid with bronze. There is also traces of the original green paint on the ribs and trunk. Owner believes it was from a Dutch whaler that was wrecked on this notoriously dangerous coastline, the capstan was washed ashore and then plundered for the bronze and the carcass put in storage and forgotten.
