Medallion - Great Britain - First World War medal struck in bronze, by Ernest Gillick (1874 - 1951), presented to members of the 'Inns of Court' (British Law Courts), who fought during the First World War, obverse depicting image of 'Pegasus' the symbol of the Inner Temple, reverse 'The Inner Temple To Members Of The Inn Who Fought For Their Country - 1914 - 1918'. The Inns of Court had their own British Army Regiment which dated back to 1584. From 1909 and throughout the First World War it served as an Officer Training Corps which consisted of men mainly connected with the Law Courts. Samuel Tonkiss (1909-1992), A portrait bust of Laurence Stephen Lowry, signed and numbered 29/36 from a limited edition produced in 1975, bronze, height 29cm (excluding marble base), together with a reprinted photograph showing the artist with Lowry. * Samuel Tonkiss was born in Shropshire and moved to Todmorden in West Yorkshire, where he worked as a journalist. In 1959 he began to sculpt a series of portrait busts, some of which were cast in small editions. An earlier head of Lowry sculpted in 1971 is in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
