ARTHUR WAAGEN (German, 1833-1898); a monumental bronze, 'Kabyle Au Retour De La Chasse (The Berber Hunter)', signed, with Martin Fondeur inscription, with integral bronze base, height approx 119cm, width approx 96cm.Footnote: The artist was born in the Baltic port of Memel, East Prussia (now Klaipeda, Lithuania) and pursued his career in Paris. He exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1861 and 1887 and this particular model is classed as the sculptor's defining model; another cast of this model is in the Dahesh Museum in New York. The image itself depicts a Berber tribesman from the mountain regions of North Africa returning to the village with his dogs, having rescued a lamb whilst holding aloft the predator's hide. This particular bronze is the rare and largest version of this model cast by Waagen.Provenance: Private collection in North West.Additional InformationThe only note of condition is that the front right hound looking up at the figure has had its tail broken, which you can clearly see and which would require attention. Apart from this, there is some rubbing to the raised parts, such as tips of ears, cloaks, but overall a magnificent version of this rare and large bronze.

AFTER THE ANTIQUE; a very large and impressive 19th century bronze figure group of Aeneas, Anchises and Ascanius fleeing Troy, unsigned and presented on a mahogany tapering column, height of bronze approx 92cm, height of column 105cm.Provenance: Private collection in North West.Additional InformationSome rubbing to the raised parts, noticeably the arms of the Roman soldier, heads, tips of fingers, backs of legs, all the raised areas. Otherwise general surface wear throughout, but free from damage. The base is scuffed and has a few chips to the corners and has a couple of tiny sections of the beadwork moulding missing.

AFTER GUILLAUME COUSTOU; a very large pair of late 19th century bronze Marly horses, each bearing signature and on integral bases, height approx 69cm, length approx 57cm.Provenance: Private collection in North West.Additional InformationSome rubbing to the raised parts, noticeably across the arms of the figures, the raised nostrils of the horse and the legs of the horse, but apart from this surface wear there is no damage to mention.

FRANZ XAVER BERGMANN (1861-1936); a fine pair of late 19th century Austrian cold painted bronzes modelled as an Arab gentleman with hawks and his companion with game over his shoulders and rifle upon his back, both numbered 4639, signed, both raised on green marble circular bases, heights 38cm and 31.75cm (2).Additional InformationBoth are numbered 4639, one is stamped with the Bergmann mark and with an indistinct name stamped beneath. the second bronze has the indistinct mark, which presumably is the Bergman mark, stamped beside the 4639 number. The figure with rifle on his back has a broken base which has been glue repaired. The second figure that is hawking has a small chip approx 15 x 10mm to the marble base and a couple of further small marks. This figure also has some rubbing around the ankles and the right wrist with just gentle rubbing elsewhere. The figure with rifle again has some rubbing to raised parts, as you would expect, but both retain a huge proportion of original colour and both really are stunning examples of Bergmann bronzes.

A RARE ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL, GULate Shang DynastyOf slender form rising to an elegantly flaring trumpet neck, the middle section and spreading foot cast with two taotie masks decorated with leiwen, divided and separated by vertical notched flanges, with a band of cicadas above the masks on the foot, all reserved on leiwen grounds, cast with a Bing Wu pictogram inside the foot, the greenish-grey patina with malachite encrustation.25.5cm (10in) high.Footnotes:Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價商晚期 青銅饕餮紋觚Gu vessels were used as sacrificial wine receptacles and were among the most important objects used in rituals during the late Shang dynasty. Although reference to the name gu is frequently found in early ritual texts, it became associated with the present vessel shape in the catalogues of antiquities produced by Song dynasty scholars. The shape appears to have originated in pottery production of the Neolithic period, which came in various sizes and shapes. The bronze version, however, probably emerged during the Erligang period (c.1510-1460 BC) and became popular during the Yinxu period (1250-1192 BC), when it became an important component of ritual vessel sets. Similar archaic gu vessels, Shang dynasty, are illustrated by R.W.Bagley, Shang Ritual Bronzes in the Arthur M.Sackler Collections, Cambridge MA, 1987, pp.216-227.A similar ritual bronze wine vessel, gu, late Shang dynasty, was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 29 November 2016, lot 28. A RARE ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL BELL, BOEastern Zhou DynastyThe instrument with a pointed oval section, cast on each side with four horizontal bands, the broad lowest band decorated with low-relief designs depicting taotie masks flanked by stylised dragons patterned in leiwen spirals, the upper three bands each bearing six large hemispherical bosses and divided by a vertical panel, the flat top supporting an elaborate openwork suspension loop cast as a pair of confronted feline mythical beasts with sinuous bodies decorated with swirling leiwen designs, upturned curling tails and long necks, the surface with a grey-green patina and scattered malachite and azurite encrustations.25.4cm (10in) high. Footnotes:Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價東周 青銅饕餮紋鎛鐘Impressive in form and design, the present bell reflects the high sophistication level achieved in Chinese casting techniques during the Eastern Zhou period. The implement was produced using the typical casting techniques of the state of Jin (present-day Shanxi Province), which became the main centre of bronze casting in north China at the time.Ritual bells were decorated by using carved clay pattern blocks which were impressed onto strips of clay which served as moulds for the bronze. The impressive rows featured on the present bell would have been obtained using one master pattern block so the same design could be repeated on different bells. Similar bells to the present example were excavated from the tomb of the Marquis Yi of Zheng (d. ca. 433 BC), see J.Rawson, Mysteries of Ancient China, London, 1996, p.133. According to the author, the elliptical cross-section of bells dating to the Eastern Zhou dynasty was a fundamental element that determined the musical quality and the two notes that could be achieved: the first by striking the bell on the outside at the central point of the lip, the second by striking the corner; see Ibid., p.134.A bronze ritual bell, Eastern Zhou dynasty, displaying a similar decoration as the present example, is illustrated in the Marco Polo Seventh Centenary Exhibition, Chinese Art, Venice, 1954, no.75; a further example is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, acc.no.1988.20.7.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Following the sumptuary laws of 1391, which regulated Ming dynasty dress, the classical Chinese clothing traditions of the Tang and Song dynasties were revived. Tang and Song official costumes themselves can be traced even further back, to the Han dynasty. The long robe with wide sleeves, the sash embellished with beaded jewellery, the rectangular office plaque across the chest were all part of Han dynasty court apparel. One can, therefore, find a close similarity between traditional attires of Chinese court officials over many centuries. Nowhere can this be observed as clearly as on the larger-than-life stone figures of civil officials lining the spirit roads leading to their emperors' mausoleums. Prior to the appearance of the lei, pou were used as wine containers. There was a short overlap of pou and lei and, by the late 12th century BC, pou had essentially disappeared.Together with other bronze vessels manufactured for holding food and wine, the fanglei formed part of the ritual paraphernalia employed during the performance of important sacrifices to the ancestors of the highest-ranking families of the time. Honoured and commemorated through the use of these precious vessels, the ancestral spirits were encouraged to confer blessings on their descendants; while at the same time, the use of the vessel displayed, to the living, the power and wealth of their deceased owner. The present vessel shares similar stylistic features with other published examples dating to the Shang and Zhou dynasties, namely large taotie masks on the lower body below either birds or dragons; dragons on the shoulder; and birds or dragons on the foot and neck; three handles, two on the shoulder and a third on one side of the lower body; and a mask on each side at the shoulder.
