Small figures such as these were offered at shrines during the Archaic Period in Ancient Greece. They are commonly found at cave shrines, such as Skotino Cave on Crete, which has produced a number of similar examples. For a discussion of cave shrines in Archaic Greece see Rutkowski, B. A bronze figurine or idol modelled in the round with short arms extended to the sides, knees flexed, triangular beard (or beaked headdress?), slit to the genitals. 13 grams, 39mm (1 1/2"). Acquired on the German art market in the 1990s. The figure may represent the god Freyr who is sometimes depicted with a short goatee beard. The slit to the groin may have been for attachment of a separately modelled phallus. Fine condition. [No Reserve]
