20th century AD. A sheet bronze container with cast figure of Kubera, god of wealth, to the lid in high relief, religious text inside, thong to the lateral loops. 85 grams, 33cm including strap (13). Property of a London gentleman; acquired before 1996. Kubera is originally a Hindu deity associated with wealth and ruler of the Yakshasas, or nature spirits. His cult was merged into Tibetan Buddhism where he maintains similar roles to his Hindu origins as well as being ruler of the north and king of the four guardian deities. He is often shown holding a mongoose which descends to the underworld kingdom of the Nagas, snake like beings who guard the treasures of the earth. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
