A pair of late 16th Century bronze and wrought iron andirons: the scroll legs centred by lion masks, flanked by a founder's mark and town mark for Malines, the detachable columns of balusters, balls and blades engraved with the arms and crest of the Fust family in the County of Gloustershire, 56cm high.*Note Richard Fust, b.1568, his 2nd wife Catharine, daughter of Giles Huereblock of Ghent, possibly brought as part of her dowry, Ghent being only thirty miles from Malines.* Note Kuile, Onno ter 1986. Thomas Pyke, Bridgwater, a large four pint skillet: the handle cast T.P.B.WATER IX, raised on three peg feet, 48cm long.*Note graduated skillets from I to V are well known but this is probably the only recorded IX at present. Thomas Pyke C1742-1830, a major West Country brass-founder, gun and bell founder, twice Mayor of Bridgwater, banker and was declared bankrupt in 1815. *Note Ref. A very small mid 17th Century bronze skillet: on tapering legs with hoof feet, the handle cast 'Tho Palmar' with open brace below, 21.5cm long.*Note Thomas Palmar, bell and pot founder, Canterbury 1641-1670. A mid to late 17th Century bronze cauldron: from the Sturton foundry, South Petherton, Somerset, with single girdle band , angular loop handles on three feet, cast with the foundry mark and founder's mark P, previously unrecorded, possibly for Philippa Sturton, wife of Thomas Sturton I (married 1642).*Note Ref. A rare graduated set of five 17th Century motto skillets: cast at The Fathers' Foundry, Montacute, Somerset, the second smallest, cast 'PITY THE PORE 1684' is the only dated example, the date referring to the extreme cold of that winter when the Thames froze and supported the Frost Fair.*Note Ref. Clemant Tosear I & II, Salisbury, a large skillet: the handle cast with maker's name, with historic blacksmith's repair, 49.5cm long.* Note. The Tosears were bell and pot founders (c.1679-1717) and were famously bad at casting their skillets with serviceable legs.
