An antique 19th Century gilt bronze ' Head Of Minerva ' bust - after the original Roman statue head of the Goddess Sulis Minerva discovered in Bath c1727. The head being of bronze construction, with gilding to the exterior. Imperfections found in the original are replicated here - including the unusual rectangular section under the chin, and small rectangular piece above the left eye. To the front and rear of the hairline are two holes, likely left over from the casting process as these are not present on the original. Measures approx; 34cm tall. The head clearly being an exact copy of the original (now on display at The Roman Baths, Bath) with identical imperfections and markings, and is the only known example to have been taken directly from the original using the lost wax process. Its origins are undocumented but is believed to have been cast in a mould taken from the original in the mid to late 19th century. The Head Of Minerva was under the care of The British Museum from 1920 to 1947, before it was handed to The Roman Baths. Both The British Museum and The Roman Baths have no records of a copy ever having been made, so this must pre-date both stewardships. A unique and interesting piece of local interest history. The [original] gilt bronze head of the goddess Sulis Minerva is one of the best known objects from Roman Britain. Its discovery in 1727 was an early indication that the Roman site at Bath was not a typical settlement. Gilt bronze sculptures are rare finds from Roman Britain as only two other fragments are known.
