He is best known for compiling the Book of Han, the second of China's twenty-four dynastic histories, after Sima Qian's Shiji. Ban Gu was also a poet who mainly wrote in the fu rhapsody form, a literary form that was part poetry and part prose. The inscription on the present lot is the preface to his rhapsody.
