Property of a North West London gallery; formerly in a 1980s collection. This object was most likely used as an end-piece, fastened onto material or leather to prevent fraying, for example. The inscription could include a reference to a Saint Methodius (???????"). There are two possible candidates during this period, one St Methodius who was patriarch of Constantinople and died in 847 AD, and another who was Bishop of Olympus and is thought to have died a martyr at Chalcis in 311 AD.
