EPSTEIN JACOB: (1880-1959) American-born British Sculptor. A good vintage signed and inscribed 10.5 x 15 photograph, the image depicting Epstein's lifesize bronze sculpture entitled The Visitation (1926). Photograph by Paul Laib and bearing his credit stamp to the verso. Signed by Epstein in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount and inscribed to C. P. Scott. Some light creasing, age toning and minor foxing to the photographer's mount, only very slightly affecting Epstein's inscription but not the signature, G The Visitation had originally been intended to be a pair of sculptures, however Epstein only completed one piece. The Tate Gallery acquired the sculpture in 1927 and their exhibition label of 2004 stated that ‘Epstein described this figure as expressing ' a humility so profound as to shame the beholder who comes to my sculpture expecting rhetoric or splendour of gesture'. When he first exhibited it he called it 'A Study' so as to disguise its content.’ Paul Laib (1869-1958) German-born Fine Art and Portrait Photographer.
