Intéressante lettre citant les dernières parutions dont celle de Voltaire qu’il commente ; L’abbé a eu le plaisir de voir plusieurs fois le père Rivoire ; C’est bien le plus galant homme et le meilleur cÅ“ur que je connaisse. Quoiqu’il m’ait déjà donné presque tout son grand bronze et m’ait promis de m’envoyer le reste, je l’ai forcé, pour ainsi dire, l’épée dans les reins à recevoir quelques bagatelles (…). Il donne des nouvelles de sa santé, allant régulièrement aux offices ; mais je ne suis content qu’au milieu de mes livres et de mes chères médailles (…). Il fait la critique de l’ouvrage du père Baldini savant antiquaire de Rome qui a donné en 1743 une édition très augmentée des Numismata, et l’étude du père Jobert de la Sciences des Médailles éditée en 1692. Vous êtes vous procuré le Dictionnaire des Antiquités Romaines, traduit et abrégé du grand Dictionnaire de Pitiscus, in-8°, 3 vol., Paris 1766. On y cite plusieurs passages latin sans en marquer la source ; n’est-ce pas un défaut ? (…). Il donne encore quelques nouvelles de littérature, faisant part de la publication de l’Examen critique des Apologistes de la Religions chrétienne, ouvrage posthume de M. Freret, membre très sçavant de notre Académie. Les philosophes prétendent qu’il n’y a rien de plus fort en ce genre. Ils prodiguent les mêmes éloges au Christianisme dévoilé, autre production posthume du nommé Boulanger et rédigée par Diderot. On avait déjà du même Boulanger L’Antiquité dévoilée par ses usages, trois vol. dont le Despotisme oriental n’est que la suite. Il parait aussi Le Philosophe ignorant par M. de Voltaire, du moins on le lui attribue. C’est une nouvelle tournure donnée à ses anciennes pensées, on n’y trouve rien de neuf. Vous avez pû remarquer dans son Dictionnaire et dans sa Philosophie de l’Histoire qu’il se répète à tout moment (…). Il fait part de la candidature de quatre concurrents pour la place vacante laissée à l’Académie, Thomas, Saint-Foix, l’archevêque de Toulouse et Bury. Etc.
