A Striking Fan, the wood sticks painted black, serpentine, the guards of shaped bone. The fan, in ''cabriolet'' form, created with an upper fabric leaf painted with two elegant ladies being conveyed across water in a gondola, adorned with cerise flowers. Below the central section, the sticks are shaped and decorated in blue, effectively causing a double horizontal band. This design is repeated at the tip of the upper guard. Likely 1920's. The verso is plain. Together with A 19th Century Wood Fan, the monture painted black, the double paper leaf silver to the recto and bronze to the verso (2)
A Palmette or Jenny Lind Fan, the panels of black paper, each embroidered with black beads and gold sequins in a floral design. The verso is plain. Together with A Folding Fan in plain black cotton, opening to a half circle, the second guards clipping together to form a handle, the word ''PATENTIRT'' marked on one handle; A Black Gauze Folding Fan, the double leaf embroidered to the recto in vertical rows with gold sequins of different shapes and sizes. The verso is plain, the black monture is clouté; A Mid-19th Century Fan, the lithographed leaf mounted on sturdy white Mother of Pearl, carved, pierced and heavily gilded, the central gorge featuring a suitor offering a gift to his lady, her gown in bronze, this cartouche bordered in gold, the reserves with floral detail. The recto features three young couples dancing in a clearing to a tune played by a piper, buildings and a mountain range in the background. The verso shows a simple scene of ruins surrounded by water. The elaborately shaped gold metal loop is fitted with coloured stones to the rivet and a red stone to the lower shaped portion; and A Wood Fan, the monture gilded, probably Spanish, the fabric leaf printed with a cheerful profusion of colourful flowers, enclosing a central cartouche of a young lady in 18th century costume smiling beguilingly for her portrait. The verso is plain brown glazed cotton (5). Some rubbing to the paint on the folding fan sticks.. The MOP fan has damage to the monture, some glue residue, some splits and rubbing to the leaf.
Of Chinese Interest: A 20th Century Navy-Blue Silk Cover or Wall Hanging, embroidered profusely in bronze metal thread, having a formal border worked with various flower heads, leaves and tendrils, a large central chrysanthemum within, this being surrounded by flowers matching those in the border, and large bunches of fruits. Backed in a plain fabric of bronze colour Approx. 67cm by 132cm. The silk satin is strong. Just a very few of the threads need to be re-couched. One area of tiny black spots noted against the blue background, difficult to see.
Three Fine and Unusual Coin Purses, to include an ''en diable'' example, slightly larger than usual, incorporating different techniques, metal beads being used for fringing and are integral in the upper body. The gold metal rods or bars end with particularly ornate finials, each with tiny turquoise stones in each side. A gold chain and embossed finger ring are additional fixtures. Next, a small purse formed with the spider's web design, in gold and silver metal threads, with metal thread tassel and loops attached to the draw thread. Lined in turquoise. Finally, a larger coin purse worked entirely in mainly silver metal thread, the lower section also with bronze, supplemented with silk threads for the pink and yellow rather exotic flowers (one side with the look of orchids) and shaded green leaves. Small metal thread balls to the bottom and to the ends of the draw threads.. The cream floral band in item 1 is slightly foxed but generally the purse feels firm and unused. Item 2, the gold thread to the top might be a later addition as well as the lining. Item 3 is crisp and firm.
