§ ARCHIE WEBB (SCOTTISH 1963-2005) SEVEN YEAR ITCHBronze sculpture (Dimensions: 72cm x 53cm (28.25in x 20.75in))Biography Extracted from the artist's obituary in the Scotsman: "Archie’s style of working was influenced by the Munich Seven, a group of German expressionist painters who were also German punks around 1979. Punk was a huge influence at every level, and Archie always said the most important night of his life was 7 May, 1977, when, aged 14, he saw the Clash on their White Riot tour. Archie’s paintings are mainly figurative, with a bold use of thickly applied oil paint. Many, with subject matter of cars, animals and art history, had an overt social or political comment, while other paintings were more escapist or fantastical. Archie’s shows were always an event whether he was exhibiting in Edinburgh, London or Glasgow, and he received critical acclaim for his sculptures as well as his painting. His work was often humorous and irreverent, poking fun at the establishment. It was always full of life and humanity. Archie followed a path that was totally his own. He was always ahead of his time as a student, and works from early student days fit absolutely into his later work. Other late works of note include Warriston Crematorium and a large blue composition of Brighton Pier. These paintings add to a vast body of work that has yet to be properly assessed."

§ BENNO SCHOTZ R.S.A., L.L.D. (ESTONIAN/SCOTTISH 1891-1984) ALICE AND THE RED QUEEN - 1975Signed, handwritten note affixed to base with date and explanation of design, bronze sculpture with gold patina (Dimensions: 20cm high x 21cm deep x 8cm wide (8in x 8.25in x 3.25in), excluding base)Note: The artist's note, affixed to the base, reads: Alice and the Red Queen. This composition illustrates an incident in 'Alice Through the Looking Glass.' The Red Queen takes Alice's hand and they begin to run. Alice is running very fast indeed, in fact she is flying thro' the air. Alice asks the Queen "Why is it that although we run so fast, yet the tree beside which we were standing when we began to run is still with us?" Answers the Queen "Here, my dear, if you want to get somewhere else you have to run twice as fast." This is the original design which I carried out on a large scale for a school. As a further explanation the Red Queen is the Queen in the game of chess. Benno Scotz Feb. 1975. Biography: Benno Schotz emigrated to Glasgow from Estonia in 1912, and gained an engineering diploma from the Royal Technical College. From 1914-1923 he worked in the drawing office of John Brown and Company, a Clydebank shipbuilders, while attending evening classes in sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art. Donald Moss (1920 - 2010) "The Biltmore House". Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 18c Biltmore House stamp issued August 28, 1981. More than any other American architect of his day, Richard Morris Hunt created buildings that suited the taste of the very rich. His lavish country home, Biltmore House, epitomizes this talent. Built for George Vanderbilt amid the lofty grandeur of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is a strikingly beautiful monument to the wealth of a Gilded Age. To create a mansion of the splendor his client desired, Hunt took inspiration from the Renaissance chateaux of France. Flying buttresses, clusters of pinnacles, gables and gothic chimneys combine in this towering house to make the surrounding mountains, as architect Hunt declared, "in scale with the house." Inside, the home is just as grand. Chandeliers, bejeweled with Thomas Edison's newly devised light bulbs, hang pendant-like amid a swirling marble and bronze staircase that reaches -- from appearances -- all the way to heaven. The library is paneled in rich, Circassian walnut and reflects both the taste and the wealth of a man who could afford to travel the world learning eight languages and cultivating a taste for art and literature. Today, the lavish Biltmore House is a museum with a collection of paintings, sculpture, prints and furniture that is a marvel to the modern age. Stately and remote, the house towers over landscaped gardens and rolling lawns, a testimony to the skill and vision of architect Hunt, the pioneer of palace building in America. Image Size: 17.5 x 15 in. Overall Size: 20 x 19.75 in. Unframed. (B07092)
