A BRONZE SCULPTURE 'TAICHI' BY JU MING (1938-) 1991 Standing on one leg with outstretched arms, signed, numbered 2/20, 38cm, 12kg. Provenance: from the collection of the late Michael Sherrard QC., purchased from Hanart 2 Contemporary Art, Hong Kong on 16th November 1991, a copy of the original invoice is available. Cf. a further Ju Ming bronze figure from the collection of the late Michael Sherrard QC. which was sold at Christie's in Hong Kong, 28th May 2017, Lot 401. Ju Ming was born in 1938 in Tongxiao, Taiwan, and is most famous for his geometric steel and bronze works. Ju trained as a painter and woodcarver and opened his own studio in 1959 and gained fame in New York in 1970s. λ A PAIR OF SMALL JAPANESE SHIBAYAMA VASES MEIJI 1868-1912 The slender bodies in ivory and silver decorated with mother of pearl inlays with birds amongst flowering branches, the necks and feet applied with floral motifs in cloisonné enamels, both signed Tomonobu, together with a pair of patinated bronze vases decorated with onagadori cockerels perched on prunus branches, each signed Koshu koku (made by Koshu), 18.2cm max. (4) Provenance: a private English collection, the two Shibayama vases purchased from Sotheby's, 28th July 1971, lot 209, and the bronze vases from Sotheby's, 25th April 1990, lot 1818.
A MASSIVE CHINESE GILT BRONZE INCENSE BURNER MODELLED AS A LUDUAN MING DYNASTY Standing four-square, the hinged lid formed as the beast's head, baring its teeth with a single curved horn to the forehead, the body and tail with finely detailed hair, the flanks cast in high relief with stylised lingzhi fungus and scrolls, the feet with claws, the base with a later applied Japanese nine character mark, 45cm, 14kg. (2) Provenance: from the collection of Sir Henry Norman (1858-1939). Luduan are mythical beasts with rounded bodies and clawed feet. They are believed to have the ability to detect the truth, travel over great distances in a very short time and speak all the languages of the world. A RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL PALE BLUE-GROUND RU-TYPE TWO-HANDLED ARCHAISTIC VASE SIX CHARACTER YONGZHENG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1723-35 After a bronze form, with a flared ovoid body decorated with four vertical flanges to the neck and foot, with two further flanges and two loop handles at the shoulder, all beneath a pale blue celadon glaze, 33cm. Provenance: a Scottish private collection acquired in the early 20th century. The shape of this vase is directly derived from a Shang dynasty bronze lei. For a similar example cf.
