A bronze brazier on three naturally cast feet one swing handle lacking h.19cm. diam.38.5cm. There have been a number of suggestions as to the origin and date of this lot. The ribbed bowl seems to recall documented 15th and 16th century vessels such as cauldrons and yet the supporting feet have a degree of sophistication not associated with this period. The form would appear to echo designs from the antique and seems reminiscent of quality reproductions produced in Italy from the end of the 19th century. It has also been suggested that the piece recalls Spanish arabic influenced vessels. W

Cabinet makers like Andries Bongen and Matthijs Horrix both originating from Germany anticipated on the high demand by producing furniture in the French taste. Unfortunately most surviving Dutch pieces remain anonymous as cabinet makers were not required to stamp their work. Although it is not possible to attribute this commode the overall design realtes to makers like Bongen and Horrix.
