GASTON D'ILLIERS (1876-1952) - BRONZE SCULPTURE OF A HORSE a bronze sculpture Bucking Percheron, with the horse bucking and balanced on one foot, with a circular bronze base and mounted on a square marble plinth. Also with another similar figure, of slightly smaller proportions. Both signed to the bronze G D'illiers, one figure loose from the base and with the remains of a trade label underneath. 16.5cms and 14.5cms high. (2) *This model was used as a study for a car mascot, Gaston D'illiers is best known for his sculptures of horses.

With a list of his sculptures including this example, and a booklet on David Backhouse by the Bruton St Gallery. Signed to the base, D Backhouse, 5/6, and with a foundry mark. 61cms high *David Backhouse was born in Wiltshire and studied at the Royal West of England College of Art, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. A pair of 19th Century Chinese chocolate patinated bronze figures of temple lions with foot upon a ball and/or cub each wearing a necklace with swinging ball pendant raised on a cast and embossed blanket covered socle or pedestal bearing four character "Wanli" mark to front of base 26 cm long x 17.5 cm wide x 33 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Some pitting, surface scratches, etc, throughout and particularly to one side of the dog with the patching. One has some filled patches to the bronze, however, appears to have been some time ago so assume during manufacture. Otherwise general wear and tear conducive with age and use. Ryder went on to produce a miniature edition of 'Curled Up', cast in bronze in a run of 100.

It was in this year that he created the large bronze panel entitled Kreuzberg in the National Gallery Collection, Edinburgh. The piece also appears to have connections to Paolozzi's famous reliefs for Cleish Castle in Kinross. We are grateful to Judith Collins for her kind assistance in cataloguing this work.
A small collection of ancient and antique coins, to include a possible Roman bronze coin for Trajan 98-117AD, Dupondius obv: IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM PM, rev: TR POT COS V IIII PP (approx 13.8g), various silver coins to include Charles II, George III 1817, Queen Victoria 1883 one shilling, George II 1757, various other silver three pence coins and a bronze cartwheel penny (15). CONDITION REPORT There is a small hole in the Charles II coin.
