HAYASHI HACHIZAEMON (CIRCA 1850-1908), A JAPANESE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL VASE MEIJI-TAISHO ERA Of tapering cylindrical form with slightly splayed foot and a broad, everted mouth, decorated on the light blue ground with convolvulus flowers and tendrils, gilded to base and interior neck, mounted with shakudo foot and rim, engraved mark "Hachi" within a circle 27.9cm highHayashi Hachizaemon was taught by Tsukamoto Kaisuke who was one of the most influential enamellers of the 1860s and who had also taught Hayashi Kodenji. In 1875 he went with Kaisuke to the Ahrens Company in Tokyo to learn advanced western enamelling techniques. He exhibited his work through the Nagoya Shippo Kaisha at the 1881 Second National Industrial Exposition in Ueno Park, Tokyo. 'I possess one very fine figure, I bought it in Canton, some time and thirty years ago; it had been dug out of ruins- Whether it represents Confortsee, or not, I am unable to say: neither could I get any information on that need from Dr Robert Morrison, the great Chinese scholar to whom I showed the figure..'. The letter also details the gift of some porcelain from Canton and some glassware. On a heavily weighted base, with various old holes, wear and marks. And with later wing nuts used to support the figure.
