A late 18th century French smallsword, flattened hexagonal section tapering blade 31”, etched for most of its length with sun, man in the moon, star, mythical figures, trophies and scrolls, etc in panel, 2 ovals at forte inscribed “Si mon bras redoubtable est arme de ce fer, j’attaquerai le diable au milieu de l’enfer” (If with this blade I am armed so well, i’ll attack the devil in the depths of hell), bronze pierced outer shell guard cap, indent beaded knucklebow, ornamental ovoid pommel, chequered ebony grip with copper corners (2 missing). GC for age with dark patina overall (grip lower band broken, hilt slightly mis-shapen)
