William Railton won the design competition, his Corinthian column decorated with bronze acanthus leaves cast from British cannon was finally completed in 1843, E.H. Baily's 18-foot-high statue of Nelson, facing south, towards the Palace of Westminster, surmounted the 184-foot-high granite column in November of the same year. The bas reliefs of the four battle scenes around the base were added in 1854 and Landseer's lions were placed at the four corners in 1867.

A PAIR OF AUBERGINE AND YELLOW GLAZED BISCUIT PORCELAIN BEAKER VASES OF ARCHAISTIC GU SHAPE CHINA, QING DYNASTY, POSSIBLY KANGXI PERIOD It rests on a base imitating a stand with ruyi scrolls, enameled in egg yellow tones. The body, in three parts, is either carved or molded with archaistic patterns such as stylized cicadas and taotie masks. It is all covered in aubergine and yellow enamels. The base is left unglazed. A pair of early 19th century bronze and ormolu figural candelabra, each modelled as a cherub holding aloft scrolling branches, with pineapple cut glass sconces and spear shaped drops, on two tone marble socles, width 30cm, height 42cmOverall both in good clean condition, one cherub very slightly leaning to the left with some verdigris staining running down his left side, the branches on both swivel and are slightly uneven in setting, sconces have brass liners that are slightly ill-matched, some a little taller than others and therefore do not quite fit the glass work, one of the bases has a chip to the front edge, both have very slight nicking to the red edges, overall fair to good condition but possibly to some extent made up, certainly the bases look slightly odd.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
