The race was in the Solent from the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, Ryde, Isle of Wight. However, only one boat "Heroine" made the start line and the gold medal was awarded by a 'sail-over.'The second boat that did not make the start was "Mignonette". The helmsman of the 4-,man crew was Capt. R. Sloane-Stanley.

Session in Rome in 1966 (6) New Zealander Arthur Porritt won bronze in the famous 'Chariots of Fire' 100m at the Paris 1924 Olympic Games. He was captain of the 1928 New Zealand Olympic team but had to withdraw from competition due to injury. Later Lord Porritt served as New Zealand's IOC member between 1934 and 1967.
