A bronze group of Nessus abducting Deianira, in the style of Giambologna after a model by Antonio Susini, Nessus the centaur rearing whilst carrying Deianira aloft, 18th / 19th century, 16.5in (41.8cm) h, 16.25in (41.2cm) w, mounted on a breakfront Siena marble plinth base, the bronze and plinth 23.5in (59.6cm) h. A break to the left hind leg. Provenance: The collection of the banker F. A. Konig (1867-1940) of Tyringham House, Buckinghamshire and thence by descent to the present owner. See below a photograph of the bronze in situ in the Drawing Room of Tyringham House c. 1917.
After Pierre Jules Mene (1810 - 1879). Mare and Dog. Cast iron with bronze finish, probably by Coalbrookdale, 9.5in (24cm) h, 19in (48cm) w. This model was exhibited in bronze in the Salon of 1859. No.34 in Mene`s catalogue. Coalbrookdale produced many copies of Mene`s work in both bronze and iron.
