Crater shaped vase, decorated with half plastic heads of Dionysus and companions. Modelled on the marble vase found in 1771 on the site of the Hadrian's Villa in Rome, of which numerous replicas in various sizes and materials were made in the 19th century. h. 27,5 cm, diam. H. 25 cm, L. 34 cm, B. 17 cm. - Provenienz: seit über 40 Jahren in norddeutschem Privatbesitz. - Godchaux zählt zu den großen Tierbildhauern der 1. Hälfte des 20. Jh., den sog. 'Animaliers'. Schon früh spezialisierte er sich nach seinem Studium an der École des Beaux Arts in Paris unter dem Eindruck der Tierbronzen von Antoine-Louis Barye auf die Tierplastik. Ab 1905 stellte er regelmässig im Salon der französischen Künstler aus. 1925 gewann er die Silbermedaille auf der "Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes" die Silbermedaille. Bekannt wurde Godchaux vor allem für seine Elefantenskulpturen aus Bronze. In later years he devoted himself increasingly to the representation of female nudes. Die Kugelspielerin, sein bekanntestes Werk, schuf Schott 1897 lebensgroß in Bronze für den Blumengarten am Südende der Königsallee in Düsseldorf. In 1897 Schott produced his most famous work, the female ball player, as a life-size bronze sculpture for the flower garden at the southern end of the Königsallee in Düsseldorf.
