See gold brooch in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (95.15.11) for similar inscription to Hercules Augustus 33 grams, 78mm (3"). Property of a London, UK collector; acquired on the London market in the 1990s. This type of crossbow fibula was used by Roman soldiers to fasten a cloak and during the third century AD became part of the standard military uniform. The inscription HERCULI AUGUSTE refers to a western emperor, most likely augustus Maximian, who was well known as Herculius. After the death of Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Augustus), the name Augustus took on an increasingly titular function and was used by Roman emperors to indicate their imperial power. This would date the brooch within one of Maximian's two reigns, between 286-305 AD and 306/7-308/9 AD. Very fine condition. Rare.

Property of a European gentleman; formerly acquired on the German art market before 1980. The crab makes few appearances in Roman sculpture and art, but when it does it is almost always alongside a deity associated with the sea, such as Oceanus, Poseidon or the Nereids. Crabs were also the symbol of the river god Akragas, and appear frequently on the coinage of the Sicilian city which takes his name. This bronze figurine shows no signs of attachment, so its specific association of function remains unclear. It might have been used as a votive figurine to one of the sea deities, or been part of a larger ensemble. Very fine condition.

From the private collection of a UK gentleman; acquired from a London gallery in 2008; formerly in a 1980s collection. In Etruria, bronze and terracotta wine jars, known as oinochoes, olpes, and kantharoi, were often modeled after the shape of a human head. Many of them featured satyrs and maenads, attendants of Dionysus, the god of wine. This vessel is a later Roman version of this Etruscan type and would have been used to serve guests at a symposium, known as a commissatio during the Roman period. The symposium was part of a banquet that took place after the meal, when drinking for pleasure was accompanied by music, dancing, recitals, or conversation, and which was a key Hellenic - and later, Roman - social institution.
