The Egyptian cat represented the less ferocious version of lion goddesses and were, due to their fecundity, associated with fertility. Their popularity was also a result of their connection with festivity and intoxication. A Greek bronze arm guard Circa 6th-5th Century B.C.26cm highFootnotes:Provenance:Kuizenga collection, the Netherlands, formed from the 1970s onwards.Very few Greek arm guards survive, suggesting that unlike greaves and even ankle-guards they were far less frequently made in antiquity. It seems likely that arm guards were not made in pairs and were used to protect the sword-arm of a hoplite, while the other arm would have been protected by his shield. Boshell collection, Texas, until 2018.The eagle was a potent symbol of Imperial Rome, being both the bird of Jupiter, ruler of the pantheon, and the emblem that epitomised Rome's militaristic might. Each legion's standard was topped by an image of an eagle, the importance of which was such that huge efforts would be expended on recovering eagles lost in battle. The most famous example of this was the decades-long struggle to recover the lost standards of three legions after the Roman defeat at the Battle of the Teutoborg Forest in 9AD (in modern-day Kalkriese, Germany).
