FRENCH SCHOOL. From the Greek mythology, Laocoon and his sons. Bronze sculpture with dark brown patina. Stamped with A. Collas reduction seal, Ferdinand Barbedienne Foundry marks and marked OUDIN at the base. H65cm, W50cm, D24cm. c19th century. Weight: 34Kg. The Greek original group “Laocoon and his sons” was excavated in Rome in 1506 and was placed in the Vatican Museum. It shows the Trojan priest Laocoon and his sons Antiphantes and Thymbraeus being attacked by sea serpents. It is believed to be one of the finest examples of the Hellenistic baroque, dating from about 200BC to 70AD. In this bronze, we see the group as it was between 1540 and 1957 with Laocoon’s extended arm as well as the sons’ restored arms. The restorations were removed in the 1980s. A similar bronze group by the Barbedienne Foundry with the Collas seal, sold in the USA at BUNTE Auction Services in Sept. 2005 for $9,000 – lot 1198. Another bronze group by Giacomo Zoffoli sold at Sotheby’s London on the 21/4/2004 sale L04230, Lot 42, estimated £15-20K, Realized £33,600 incl. premium. AN UNUSUAL LARGE EARLY 20TH CENTURY CHINESE PIERCED BRONZE TRAY, together with a good quality carved and pierced folding hardwood stand, the tray decorated with a variety of pierced and engraved borders of dragons, foliage and auspicious characters enclosing a central Shou medallion, the tray 39.75in diameter.
A CHINESE BRONZE TRIPOD CENSER, 19th Century or earlier, weighing 1.46Kg, together with a fitted wood stand, the censer with double upright loop handles, the base with a Xuande mark, the censer itself 6.6in wide including handles & 5.9in diameter at rim & 5in diameter at inner rim & 5.1in high to top of handles & 4.1in high to rim.
A GOOD QUALITY 19TH/20TH CENTURY CHINESE BRONZE CENSER, in the style of Wu Henming, weighing 1.06Kg, with double upright loop handles, the sides well cast in high relief with pairs of dragons above waves disputing a flaming pearl, the base with a Xuande mark, 5.1in wide including handles & 4.5in diameter at rim & 3.7in diameter at inner rim & 3.75in high to top of handles & 2.7in high to rim.
A GOOD QUALITY LARGE SIGNED JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD BRONZE CENSER, COVER & STAND, the censer cast in high relief with dragons and waves, the stand with pierced blossom, the cover with a hawk finial above pierced pine, the base of the censer with a maker’s mark in a rectangular reserve, 16in high overall.
A LARGE GOOD QUALITY SIGNED JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD GYOUKOU BRONZE GROUP OF TWO TIGERS ATTACKING A BULL, together with a carved hardwood stand, the bronze well modelled, the coats of the animals naturalistically rendered, the base cast with a rectangular seal mark, the bronze itself 17.5in long & 9.5in high.
