An important 18c dated small bronze mitre plane with steel sole 7" x 2" with protruding toe and heel, the extended front tote curves upwards and finishes with a scroll to form the front handle. The plane is dated 1739 (this is the earliest dated English mitre plane known) and bears the makers mark B.H.G. struck with a pair of dividers over a similarly designed plane motif, the plane has the orig rosewood infill and elongated wedge, two gunmetal strips have been screwed to the sides enabling it to be used as a shuting plane (see TATHS Journal vol 1 p 75 and illustrated and discussed Russell fig 863) Provenance: Alan Bates collection, previously sold in our Cat No 25 lot 620 G+
