A PAIR OF EARLY 20TH CENTURY SICILIAN JASPER MARBLE OBELISKS of tapering form with gilt bronze mounts and tortoise supports on square stepped bases, 27 1/2" high. Provenance: By descent, family of Vittorio Bramanti, Florence, Italy, master of `Opificio delle Pietre Dure` workshops, Florence. Completed by him after the model of the obelisks situated in `Piazza Santa Maria Novello` Florence. The originals by Giambologna in 1608, were used as start/finish marks for the annual `Palio dei Cocchi` Chariot Race held under Cosimo I, in imitation of the Roman Civcus.
